Annual Profections: How to Find Your 'Time Lord' Planet for the Year

If you want to know what the upcoming year holds for you, you might look at your transits or your Solar Return chart. But there is an ancient, incredibly accurate technique from Hellenistic astrology that has recently taken the modern astrology world by storm: Annual Profections.
Annual Profections are a simple, elegant way to determine the overarching theme of your year and identify which planet will act as your "Time Lord" (the planet in charge of your life for that specific age).
How Annual Profections Work
The concept is based on a 12-year cycle. When you are born (Age 0), you are in a 1st House profection year. The themes of your life are 1st House themes: your body, your identity, your arrival into the world.
When you turn 1, you move into a 2nd House profection year. When you turn 2, a 3rd House year. This continues around the zodiac wheel until you turn 12. At that point the cycle resets, and you are back in a 1st House year.
How to Calculate Your Profection Year
You don't need complex math to figure this out. You just need to know your current age and your Rising Sign (Ascendant).

Finding Your Time Lord
Once you know which house is activated for your age, look at your birth chart. What zodiac sign is on the cusp of that house?
(Note: Annual Profections work best using the Whole Sign House system).
Find the ruling planet of that sign. That planet is your Time Lord for the year.
Example: Let's say you just turned 27. Looking at the chart above, 27 is a 4th House year. The themes of your year will be home, family, roots and real estate. Now, look at your birth chart. Let's say your 4th House is in Taurus. The ruling planet of Taurus is Venus. Therefore, your Time Lord for the year is Venus.
Time Lord lookup table: every rising sign and every house year
Find your rising sign in the first column, then read across to the house year for your age (the list above). The planet in that cell is your Time Lord for the year. The table uses whole-sign houses and the traditional rulers, which is how Hellenistic astrologers used the technique: Mars rules Scorpio, Saturn rules Aquarius and Jupiter rules Pisces.

Two patterns stand out once you see the whole grid. Your 1st house year (ages 0, 12, 24, 36 and so on) always has your chart ruler as Time Lord, so those years put the planet that rules your rising sign in charge. And because Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn each rule two signs, the same planet can return as Time Lord after a gap of only a few years.
Example: who rules the year you turn 30
Age 30 is a 7th house year for everyone, a year about partners, contracts and the people you meet one to one. The Time Lord depends on the sign on your 7th house, which is the sign opposite your rising sign.

The profection year runs from one birthday to the next, not from January to December. Some astrologers also start the year at the solar return, the exact moment the Sun returns to its birth position, which can fall a day either side of your birthday.
To use the table you need your rising sign, which depends on your birth time. If you do not know it, cast your free birth chart: it shows your rising sign and every house, so you can read your Time Lord straight off the grid.
What Does the Time Lord Do?
For the entire year (from your 27th birthday to your 28th birthday), Venus is the boss of your chart.
- Natal Placement: Look at where Venus is in your birth chart. Is it in the 7th house? You might buy a house with a partner this year. Is it in the 10th house? You might start a home-based business.
- Transits: Pay close attention to transiting Venus in the sky. When Venus goes retrograde, or makes major aspects to other planets, you will feel it much more intensely than you normally would, because Venus is currently holding the steering wheel of your life.
By understanding your Profection Year and your Time Lord, you stop fighting the current. If you are in a 12th House year (rest, solitude, endings), it is not the time to launch a massive public business (a 10th House theme). Ride the wave of the house you are in, and let your Time Lord guide you.

How do I calculate my profection year?
Take your current age and divide by 12. The remainder tells you the house: a remainder of 0 is a 1st house year, 1 is a 2nd house year and so on up to 11, a 12th house year. So age 27 leaves 3, a 4th house year. The year runs from one birthday to the next.
How do I find my Time Lord?
Count from your rising sign to the house of your profection year using whole-sign houses, so the sign you land on is the profected sign. Its traditional ruler is your Time Lord. A Leo rising at age 30 lands on Aquarius, the 7th sign from Leo, so Saturn is the Time Lord.
Do profections use modern or traditional rulers?
Traditionally they use the seven visible planets as rulers: Mars for Scorpio, Saturn for Aquarius and Jupiter for Pisces. That is how the Hellenistic astrologers who developed the technique used it. Some modern astrologers add Pluto, Uranus and Neptune as co-rulers, but the classical method keeps the traditional ones.
Do I need my birth time for annual profections?
Yes, for the Time Lord. The house year comes from your age alone, but the profected sign and its ruler depend on your rising sign, which changes about every two hours. Without a birth time you can still read the house theme for your age, but not the Time Lord.
