Annual Profections: How to Find Your 'Time Lord' Planet for the Year

If you want to know what the upcoming year holds for you, you might look at your transits or your Solar Return chart. But there is an ancient, incredibly accurate technique from Hellenistic astrology that has recently taken the modern astrology world by storm: Annual Profections.

Annual Profections are a simple, elegant way to determine the overarching theme of your year and identify which planet will act as your "Time Lord" (the planet in charge of your life for that specific age).

How Annual Profections Work

The concept is based on a 12-year cycle. When you are born (Age 0), you are in a 1st House profection year. The themes of your life are 1st House themes: your body, your identity, your arrival into the world.

When you turn 1, you move into a 2nd House profection year. When you turn 2, a 3rd House year. This continues around the zodiac wheel until you turn 12. At that point the cycle resets, and you are back in a 1st House year.

How to Calculate Your Profection Year

You don't need complex math to figure this out. You just need to know your current age and your Rising Sign (Ascendant).

The Cycle by Age:

• 1st House Year: Ages 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84
• 2nd House Year: Ages 1, 13, 25, 37, 49, 61, 73, 85
• 3rd House Year: Ages 2, 14, 26, 38, 50, 62, 74, 86

Finding Your Time Lord

Once you know which house is activated for your age, look at your birth chart. What zodiac sign is on the cusp of that house?

(Note: Annual Profections work best using the Whole Sign House system).

Find the ruling planet of that sign. That planet is your Time Lord for the year.

Example: Let's say you just turned 27. Looking at the chart above, 27 is a 4th House year. The themes of your year will be home, family, roots and real estate. Now, look at your birth chart. Let's say your 4th House is in Taurus. The ruling planet of Taurus is Venus. Therefore, your Time Lord for the year is Venus.

What Does the Time Lord Do?

For the entire year (from your 27th birthday to your 28th birthday), Venus is the boss of your chart.

1. Natal Placement: Look at where Venus is in your birth chart. Is it in the 7th house? You might buy a house with a partner this year. Is it in the 10th house? You might start a home-based business.
2. Transits: Pay close attention to transiting Venus in the sky. When Venus goes retrograde, or makes major aspects to other planets, you will feel it much more intensely than you normally would, because Venus is currently holding the steering wheel of your life.

By understanding your Profection Year and your Time Lord, you stop fighting the current. If you are in a 12th House year (rest, solitude, endings), it is not the time to launch a massive public business (a 10th House theme). Ride the wave of the house you are in, and let your Time Lord guide you.
