Solar Return Chart: How to Read Your Birthday Chart for the Year Ahead
Last verified October 2026
A solar return chart is cast for the moment the Sun returns to its exact birth degree, once a year near your birthday. How to find it and read it in order.

A solar return chart is a chart cast for the exact moment each year when the Sun comes back to the degree and minute it occupied when you were born. That moment falls on your birthday or within a day of it, and astrologers read the chart drawn for it as the forecast for the year until your next return. It is sometimes called a birthday chart or a solar revolution. You read it alongside your birth chart, never instead of it: the birth chart is who you are, the solar return is what the coming year asks of that person. This guide shows why the date moves, where to cast it, which year to use and a five-step order for reading it, with a worked example computed from the ephemeris.
What is a solar return chart?
Your birth chart freezes the sky at the moment you were born. One of its fixed points is the Sun's exact position, measured in degrees and minutes of a sign. Every year the Sun travels the full circle of the zodiac and passes that point once. The chart for that instant, set for the place where you are, is your solar return.
Because the Sun is back where it started, the Sun in a solar return always has the same sign and degree as your natal Sun. Everything else changes: the rising sign, the house the Sun lands in, the Moon and the positions of every other planet. That is what makes the chart useful. It shows the same core self placed into a new set of circumstances for twelve months.
If you are new to chart reading, start with the guide to reading your birth chart, because a solar return uses the same pieces: signs, the twelve houses, the planets and the angles.
Why is my solar return not on my birthday?
The calendar year and the Sun's year are not the same length. A calendar year is 365 days, or 366 in a leap year. The Sun takes about 365 days, 5 hours and 48 minutes to return to the same point of the zodiac. So each year your return arrives roughly six hours later on the clock than the year before, until a February 29 pulls it back by a day.
Here is a worked example. Take a fictional person born on July 12, 1990 at 9:40 pm Eastern Daylight Time in New York. At that moment the Sun was at 20 degrees 25 minutes of Cancer. These are the exact moments the Sun returns to that degree from 2026 to 2030:
| Year | UTC | Eastern | Pacific | UK | India |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Jul 12, 18:32 | Jul 12, 2:32 pm | Jul 12, 11:32 am | Jul 12, 7:32 pm | Jul 13, 12:02 am |
| 2027 | Jul 13, 00:13 | Jul 12, 8:13 pm | Jul 12, 5:13 pm | Jul 13, 1:13 am | Jul 13, 5:43 am |
| 2028 | Jul 12, 06:10 | Jul 12, 2:10 am | Jul 11, 11:10 pm | Jul 12, 7:10 am | Jul 12, 11:40 am |
| 2029 | Jul 12, 11:56 | Jul 12, 7:56 am | Jul 12, 4:56 am | Jul 12, 12:56 pm | Jul 12, 5:26 pm |
| 2030 | Jul 12, 17:34 | Jul 12, 1:34 pm | Jul 12, 10:34 am | Jul 12, 6:34 pm | Jul 12, 11:04 pm |
Read down the Eastern column. From 2026 to 2027 the return moves almost six hours later, from 2:32 pm to 8:13 pm. Then 2028 is a leap year. The extra day in February pulls the calendar forward and the return jumps back to 2:10 am. From there it climbs again: 7:56 am, then 1:34 pm. The exact gaps between these returns are 365 days plus 5 hours 41 minutes, 5 hours 57 minutes, 5 hours 46 minutes and 5 hours 37 minutes. They wobble by a few minutes because the Moon and the planets pull the Earth slightly off a smooth path and the Earth's axis nods back and forth (nutation).
Two practical results follow:
- Your return can land on the day before or after your birthday. For this New York birth, the return falls on July 12 in 36 of the 41 years from 1991 to 2031 and on July 13 in the other five, all on New York time. If the same person spends their 2028 birthday in Los Angeles, the return happens at 11:10 pm on July 11, the night before the birthday.
- The time zone changes the date, not the moment. The return is one instant for the whole planet. In 2027 it is the evening of July 12 in New York and the early morning of July 13 in London and in India.
Across 1991 to 2031 the example's return moves between 2:10 am on July 12 and 3:26 am on July 13, New York time. Whether yours crosses midnight depends on your birth time and where you are, so check the exact moment every year.
How accurate does my birth time need to be?
As accurate as you can get it. In the example, moving the birth time 10 minutes later moves the 2027 return 10 minutes later too. The solar return Ascendant for New York then shifts from 18 degrees 4 minutes to 20 degrees 49 minutes of Capricorn. Move the birth time an hour and the rising sign changes from Capricorn to Aquarius. The Sun's sign in the return never changes, but the houses and angles are only as good as the birth time behind them. If yours is a rounded guess, read the solar return Sun sign, Moon sign and planet signs with confidence and treat the houses as provisional.
Where should I cast my solar return: my birthplace or where I am?
The usual convention is to cast the chart for where you are at the moment of the return, which for most people means where they live or where they spend their birthday. The planets' signs and degrees are the same anywhere on Earth. What changes with location is the rising sign, the Midheaven and therefore which house each planet falls in.
The difference is large. Here is the 2027 return for the example birth, the same instant, set for three cities:
| Return cast for | Solar return rising | Midheaven | What sits on an angle |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York | Capricorn 18 degrees | Scorpio 12 degrees | Sun about 2 degrees from the Descendant, Moon about 5 degrees from the Midheaven |
| London | Taurus 20 degrees | Capricorn 22 degrees | Sun about 2 degrees from the IC, Moon about 3 degrees from the Descendant |
| Los Angeles | Sagittarius 11 degrees | Virgo 25 degrees | Mars about 3 degrees from the Midheaven, Uranus about 3 degrees from the Descendant |
In New York the year reads as one about partnership, with the Sun on the Descendant. In London it reads as a year about home and family, with the Sun at the base of the chart. In Los Angeles Mars on the Midheaven reads as a hard-driving career year.
That is the basis of relocating a solar return: travelling for your birthday so the return is cast for a place that puts favourable planets on the angles. Some astrologers swear by it. Others argue that the chart for where you actually live the year is the one that describes it, and that a weekend away cannot rewrite twelve months. There is no study that settles it, so treat it as a debated practice. A sensible default is to cast the chart for where you are on the day, and if you travel, look at both charts and see which one the year actually resembles.
What year do I calculate my solar return for?
This is the question people ask most often, because calculators ask for a "year" and it is not obvious which one. The rule is simple:
The solar return that is in effect right now is the one that happened on or around your most recent birthday. It covers the year from that return to the next one.
For the example birth, on October 15, 2026 the person is 36. The chart in force is the July 12, 2026 return (2:32 pm Eastern). It stays in force until the 2027 return on July 12, 2027 at 8:13 pm Eastern. So when a calculator asks for the year, give it the calendar year in which the birthday you are reading for falls: 2026 for the year that started in July 2026, 2027 for the year that starts next July.
Three edge cases:
- Your birthday is a few days away. You are still in last year's return. Many people read the new chart early, which is fine for preview, but the old one is still running.
- You were born near midnight. Check the exact return moment, not the date. In the example, anyone who reads the 2027 chart from the morning of July 12 is a few hours early on New York time.
- The year starts at the return, not at midnight. Astrologers who use solar returns treat the chart as switching on at the exact moment of the return.
How do I read a solar return chart?
Do it in this order. Each step narrows the year down, and you stop when the picture is clear. The example uses the 2027 return cast for New York, with whole-sign houses, the house system the free reading on Natal Junction uses.
Step 1: the solar return rising sign. The rising sign of the return sets the tone and the approach for the year, much as your natal rising sign sets your default approach to life. In the example it is Capricorn: a year of effort, structure and slow results. Also note which house of the birth chart the solar return rising sign falls in. Here Capricorn is the natal 12th house of a person with Aquarius rising, which adds a private, behind-the-scenes layer.
Step 2: the house of the solar return Sun. This is the single most quoted factor. The Sun's house shows where the year's energy goes. In the example the Sun is in the 7th house and close to the Descendant, which says the year is built around partners, contracts and other people. See the list below for every house.
Step 3: the solar return Moon. The Moon shows what you need emotionally and where life feels most changeable. Read its sign for the mood and its house for the setting. In the example the Moon is in Scorpio in the 11th house and close to the Midheaven: intense feelings around friends, groups and public standing, with emotions on show at work. For the basics of the Moon, see the Moon sign guide.
Step 4: planets on the solar return angles. A planet within about 5 degrees of the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven or IC of the return is loud for the whole year. Orbs differ between astrologers, so the tighter the contact, the more weight you give it. In the example both lights are angular, the Sun on the Descendant and the Moon near the Midheaven, so relationships and visibility dominate.
Step 5: solar return planets on your natal angles. Finally, lay the return over the birth chart. A return planet within 2 or 3 degrees of your natal Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven or IC tends to describe a theme you feel personally. In the example nothing falls that close, which is common and simply means steps 1 to 4 carry the reading.
After those five steps, look at anything else that repeats: a sign that holds several planets, a house that both the return and the birth chart emphasise or the planet that rules the return's rising sign. Repetition between the two charts is the strongest signal you will get.
What does the solar return Sun's house mean?
- 1st house: a year about you, your body, your look and a fresh start on your own terms.
- 2nd house: money, earning, spending and what you value.
- 3rd house: learning, writing, short trips, siblings and the neighbourhood.
- 4th house: home, family, a move or renovation and private foundations.
- 5th house: romance, creativity, children, pleasure and taking a risk.
- 6th house: work routines, health habits, service and fixing the daily system.
- 7th house: partnership, marriage, contracts and open rivals.
- 8th house: shared money, debt, inheritance, intimacy and deep change.
- 9th house: travel, study, publishing, law and belief.
- 10th house: career, reputation and a public role.
- 11th house: friends, networks, communities and long-range goals.
- 12th house: rest, retreat, endings and work done out of sight.
How does a solar return work with annual profections?
The two techniques answer different questions, and they are strongest together. Annual profections give each year of life a house and a ruling planet, the "time lord", by counting one sign forward from your rising sign for every birthday. The solar return shows the actual sky for the year. Profections tell you which topic and which planet are in charge. The solar return shows how that planet is placed this time round.
In the example, the person turns 37 on July 12, 2027. Age 37 is a 2nd house profection year. Counting from Aquarius rising, the 2nd house is Pisces. Pisces is ruled by Jupiter in the traditional system that profections come from. So money and resources are the topic and Jupiter is the time lord. In the 2027 return Jupiter sits in Leo in the 8th house, the house of shared money, debt and other people's resources. Read together: a year where income grows through a partner, a contract, a loan or a joint venture, which also matches the Sun on the return's Descendant. Neither technique says that on its own as clearly.
A short routine for each birthday:
- Work out your profection year and time lord.
- Cast the solar return for where you will be.
- Find the time lord in the return: its house, its sign and whether it is angular.
- Read the return in the five steps above.
- Check the year's slow transits to your birth chart for timing within the year.
How is a solar return different from transits and a Saturn return?
A solar return is a single snapshot for a whole year. Transits are the moving sky measured against your birth chart day by day, and they are what time the events inside the year. A Saturn return is a specific transit, Saturn coming back to its birth position about every 29 and a half years. Because retrograde motion can carry Saturn across that degree up to three times, it often spans more than one solar return year. Your solar return comes every year. If a Saturn return or a Chiron return falls inside a solar return year, expect the return chart to echo it. The guide to Chiron in astrology covers the Chiron return at about age 50.
Can I get a free solar return chart?
Many free calculators will cast one if you give them your birth data and the year. Whatever you use, check that it asks where you will be on your birthday, because a solar return cast for the wrong place has the wrong rising sign and houses.
On Natal Junction, the free birth chart reading gives you the pieces you need to read a return well: your natal rising sign, your whole-sign houses and the degree of every planet, plus a list of the major transits shaping your year ahead. A personal year report that includes the solar return is coming.
Frequently asked questions
What is a solar return chart?
A solar return chart is a chart cast for the exact moment each year when the Sun returns to the degree and minute it held at your birth. It falls on your birthday or within a day of it. Astrologers read it as a forecast for the year until your next return, always alongside the birth chart rather than instead of it.
Why is my solar return a day before or after my birthday?
The Sun takes about 365 days, 5 hours and 48 minutes to return to the same zodiac degree, while the calendar year is 365 or 366 days. So the return arrives about six hours later each year until a leap day pulls it back. People born near midnight, or spending their birthday in another time zone, often see it fall a day early or late.
Should I cast my solar return for my birthplace or where I live?
The usual convention is to cast it for where you are at the moment of the return, which for most people is where they live or spend their birthday. The planets' signs stay the same anywhere, but the rising sign and houses change with location. Travelling to change the chart, called relocation, is a debated practice.
What year do I use for my solar return?
Use the return that happened on or around your most recent birthday. It runs from that exact moment until your next return. When a calculator asks for the year, enter the calendar year of the birthday you are reading for. If your birthday is a few days away, last year's return is still the one in effect.
How long does a solar return chart last?
A solar return chart lasts one year, from the exact moment of one return to the exact moment of the next. It does not switch at midnight on your birthday. Because the return can arrive up to about a day either side of the birthday, the old chart can still be running on the birthday itself.
