The Most Compatible Zodiac Signs, Tested Against 60,000 Real Charts

Last verified August 2026

We ran 60,000 full synastry comparisons through our own engine to see which Sun signs actually score best together. Same-sign pairs win, Aries and Virgo come last and the Sun sign turns out to explain less than a quarter of the result.

The Most Compatible Zodiac Signs, Tested Against 60,000 Real Charts

The highest-scoring Sun-sign pairing is Libra with Libra, at a mean of 87.5 out of 100. The lowest is Aries with Virgo, at 76.0. We generated 60,000 pairs of complete birth charts, scored each one with the same synastry engine that powers our compatibility reading, then grouped the results by Sun sign.

The more useful finding is the one those rankings hide. The two Sun signs explain only 24.3% of the compatibility score. Three quarters of it comes from everything a Sun-sign table cannot see.

The Ten Highest-Scoring Pairs

PairingMean scoreObserved range
Libra and Libra87.580 to 97
Taurus and Taurus87.077 to 96
Scorpio and Scorpio86.578 to 96
Pisces and Pisces86.278 to 93
Sagittarius and Sagittarius85.972 to 94
Gemini and Gemini85.575 to 94
Virgo and Virgo85.572 to 97
Cancer and Cancer85.572 to 95
Aquarius and Aquarius85.475 to 93
Aries and Aries85.470 to 96

Every one of the top ten is a same-sign pairing. That is not a quirk of our scoring. Two people born under the same Sun sign share an element and a modality, their Suns sit conjunct and their Mercury and Venus placements are drawn into the same neighbourhood by orbital mechanics. The engine sees a lot of agreement and rewards it.

The Ten Lowest-Scoring Pairs

PairingMean scoreObserved range
Aries and Virgo76.058 to 88
Aquarius and Cancer76.458 to 88
Libra and Pisces76.952 to 88
Aquarius and Taurus77.061 to 88
Aquarius and Virgo77.161 to 92
Aries and Capricorn77.467 to 89
Sagittarius and Virgo77.468 to 90
Libra and Taurus77.566 to 91
Capricorn and Gemini77.668 to 89
Aries and Scorpio77.755 to 91

These are the squares and the quincunxes: signs sitting 90 or 150 degrees apart, sharing neither element nor mode. Aries and Virgo have almost nothing structurally in common, and the engine finds little to agree with. Notice that we never told it which angles to dislike. The classical geometry fell out of 60,000 real charts on its own, which is the best evidence we have that the scoring is behaving sensibly.

Every Sign's Best and Worst Match

Leo is the single exception in the whole table. It is the only sign whose strongest average partner is not itself: Leo scores best with Aries, at 84.8.

Now the Part Nobody Publishes

Look again at the range column. Aries and Virgo, the worst pairing in the study, produced individual scores from 58 all the way to 88. Libra and Pisces ran from 52 to 88.

Here is the comparison that matters:

MeasurePoints
Gap between the best pairing and the worst11.5
Typical spread inside a single pairing24.1
Widest spread inside a single pairing36

The variation between two couples who share the same Sun-sign combination is more than twice the variation between the best and worst combinations. A specific Aries and Virgo couple can comfortably outscore a specific Libra and Libra couple. In our 60,000 comparisons this happened constantly.

That is what the 24.3% figure means in practice. The Sun sign is a real signal. It is simply a weak one, and it is drowned out by the three quarters of the chart it does not describe.

What Actually Moves the Score

The remaining 75.7% comes from the placements a Sun-sign table has no access to, because it never asked for a birth time or a birthplace.

The Moon is the largest single contributor. It governs emotional rhythm, and two people whose Moons agree tend to feel easy together regardless of what their Suns are doing. Venus and Mars set the romantic and physical register, and a strong Venus contact will lift a pairing that looks unpromising on paper. Then there are the cross-aspects: how each person's planets touch the other's by angle rather than by sign, which is where the fine detail of a relationship actually lives.

None of this is visible from two birthdays. It needs two full charts, which is what our compatibility tool builds before it scores anything.

Method, and What This Is Not

The study generated 60,000 pairs of complete birth charts. Birth moments span 1960 to 2005, every hour of the day, across fourteen cities spread over the world's latitudes and time zones so the Ascendant and house placements vary the way a real readership does. Every pair was scored by the production synastry engine, not by a simplified stand-in, so these numbers agree with what the site will tell you about your own relationship. The generator is seeded, so the run reproduces exactly, the same numbers every time. 78 distinct sign pairings cleared the sample threshold, and individual scores ran from 52 to 99.

Two honest limits. First, this measures our engine. A different astrologer weighting Venus more heavily, or using a different orb, would produce a different table, and anyone publishing a compatibility ranking without saying whose method produced it is hiding the most important variable. Second, and more importantly, a synastry score describes chart geometry. It does not describe a relationship. Two people are not a number, and the most interesting thing this study found is precisely how little the label on the tin tells you about what is inside.

So Which Signs Should Be Together

If you want the short answer from the data: same-sign pairings score highest on average, then elemental partners, with squares and quincunxes trailing. If you want the useful answer: find out what the rest of the two charts say, because that is where three quarters of the result is hiding.
