Accurate birth time & place are essential - the ascendant and dashas shift with both.

What is a kundali?

A kundali, also spelled kundli or called a janam kundali, is a Vedic birth chart: a map of where the Sun, the Moon, the five visible planets and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu stood in the sidereal zodiac at the moment you were born. It is the foundation of Jyotish, Indian astrology, and it is drawn as a North Indian or South Indian square chart. This tool draws both.

How it is calculated

Positions come from the open-source Astronomy Engine ephemeris, the same one behind our Western charts. They are converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, about 24 degrees 13 minutes in 2026. Houses are whole-sign from the lagna, and Rahu is the mean lunar node with Ketu opposite. Your birth place sets the time zone, including historical daylight saving, automatically.

Kundali questions

What is a kundali?

A kundali, also spelled kundli or called a janam kundali, is a Vedic birth chart: a map of where the Sun, the Moon, the five visible planets and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu stood in the sidereal zodiac at the moment you were born. It is the foundation of Jyotish, Indian astrology, and is drawn as a North or South Indian square chart.

Is kundli the same as kundali?

Yes. Kundli, kundali and janam kundali are spellings of the same word for a Vedic birth chart. This free tool casts the same chart whichever spelling you search for.

Can I make a kundali without my birth time?

Not a complete one. The lagna (ascendant) changes sign about every two hours, and the houses, divisional charts and the starting point of the Vimshottari dasha all depend on it. That is why this tool asks for the birth time. Without it you can still learn your Moon sign on most dates.

Which ayanamsa does this kundali use?

The Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard adopted by the Government of India's calendar reform and used by most Indian astrologers. It is about 24 degrees 13 minutes in 2026, so a sidereal position sits roughly 24 degrees behind the tropical one used in Western astrology.

Does this free kundali do kundli matching?

Not yet. It casts one chart at a time. Our guide to kundli matching explains the 36-point Guna Milan system and what a good score is, and the compatibility tool compares two charts in Western synastry.
