Manglik Dosha Explained: Am I Manglik and Does It Matter for Marriage?
Last verified October 2026
You are Manglik if Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. About half of all charts qualify. What it means, how it cancels and how to check yours.

You are Manglik (you have Mangal dosha, also called Kuja dosha) when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of your Vedic birth chart, counted from the Lagna, the ascendant. It is not rare: when we ran our Kundali engine on 100,000 random birth moments, 50.3 percent were Manglik from the Lagna, and 41.8 percent under the stricter rule that leaves out the 2nd house. So if you have just found out you are Manglik, you share that with roughly every second person alive. In the tradition itself it is one factor in marriage matching, not a verdict. It is often cancelled by other features of the chart, and it is considered matched when both partners have it. This guide covers the exact rule and where the schools disagree. It then shows how common each version really is, what high and low Manglik mean, the classical cancellations and how to check your own chart in a minute.
What is Manglik dosha?
Manglik comes from Mangal, the Hindi and Sanskrit name for Mars. A dosha is a fault or affliction in a chart. So Manglik dosha, Mangal dosha, Kuja dosha (Kuja is another Sanskrit name for Mars) and Bhauma dosha all mean the same thing: Mars placed where Jyotish, Vedic astrology, expects its heat to press on marriage and family life.
Mars is the planet of drive, courage, anger, competition and physical energy. Those are useful qualities, which is why Mars is not "bad". The worry is about where that energy lands. In houses tied to the self, the family, the home, the partner and the private life of a couple, traditional astrologers expect friction: arguments, impatience, a wish to dominate or long periods apart. The harshest folk versions went much further and predicted harm to the spouse. Those versions are the source of most of the fear around the word. The tradition's own long list of cancellations, covered below, shows that even classical astrologers never applied the rule mechanically.
In English, "Manglik" simply means a person whose chart has this Mars placement. It is a label for one feature of a chart, not a description of a person's character.
Which houses make you Manglik?
| House | What the house covers in Jyotish | Why Mars there is watched |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Self, body and temperament | Mars colours the personality: direct, quick to anger |
| 2nd | Family, speech and shared wealth | Harsh speech and friction in the family |
| 4th | Home, mother and domestic peace | Unrest in the home |
| 7th | Spouse and partnership | Mars sits in the house of the partner itself |
| 8th | Longevity, joint resources and sudden events | Strain on the stability of the marriage |
| 12th | The bed, private life, expenses and distance | Friction in intimacy, spending and time apart |
Houses in a Vedic chart are whole signs: the sign of the Lagna is the 1st house and the next sign is the 2nd house. The count continues around the zodiac. Mars is Manglik from the Lagna when its sign is the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th sign counting from the Lagna sign.
Do all astrologers use the same rule?
No, and this is why two calculators can give you two different answers. They disagree on two points.
Whether the 1st and 2nd houses both count. Many North Indian astrologers count five houses (the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th) and leave out the 2nd. Some South Indian astrologers include the 2nd and leave out the 1st instead. Drik Panchang, one of the most widely used panchang sites, notes both views and counts all six. Our free Kundali also uses all six, so it errs on the side of telling you.
What you count from. The Lagna is the primary reference, and in much of South India it is the only one. Many astrologers also count from the Moon (the Chandra lagna, your mind and emotions) and from Venus (the natural significator of marriage and affection). Some call you Manglik if Mars hits from any of the three. Others only count the Lagna and use the Moon and Venus to judge strength. Our Kundali checks all three and grades the result by how many are hit.
Different rules give very different headline numbers, so here is each version measured on the same sample.
How common is Manglik dosha? We tested 100,000 charts
Method. We cast 100,000 Vedic charts with the same engine that powers our Kundali (Lahiri ayanamsa, whole-sign houses). Birth moments were spread evenly across 1950 to 2009. Places were drawn at random from 32 cities: 16 in India (from Srinagar to Kochi) and 16 abroad where many Indian families live, including Kathmandu, Dhaka, Colombo, Dubai, Singapore, London, Leicester, Toronto, New York, Houston, San Francisco, Sydney, Nairobi, Durban, Port Louis and Port of Spain. For each chart we recorded Mars's house from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus.
| Rule | Share of charts that are Manglik |
|---|---|
| From the Lagna, six houses (1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12) | 50.3% |
| From the Lagna, five houses (no 2nd) | 41.8% |
| From the Moon, six houses | 49.7% |
| From the Moon, five houses | 41.6% |
| From Venus, six houses | 52.6% |
| From the Lagna or the Moon, six houses | 74.9% |
| From the Lagna or the Moon, five houses | 65.8% |
| From the Lagna and the Moon together, six houses | 25.1% |
| From any of Lagna, Moon or Venus (what our Kundali flags) | 88.0% |
| From all three at once | 13.3% |
Three things stand out.
- The single-reference answer is about 40 to 50 percent, by simple geometry. Mars has to be in one of twelve houses. In our sample it was spread almost perfectly evenly, between 8.1 and 8.5 percent in each house. Count six houses and you get about half the population. Count five and you get about 42 percent.
- Where you were born makes no difference. The 16 Indian cities and the 16 cities abroad gave the same shares to within half a percentage point on every rule.
- The wider the rule, the more meaningless the label. If any one of three reference points counts, 88.0 percent of people are Manglik. A label that applies to nearly nine people in ten cannot, on its own, tell you much about a marriage. That is why the grade and the cancellations matter far more than the yes or no.
These are tests of the astrological rule on random birth moments, not a census of real births. Real births are not spread perfectly evenly, but the Lagna moves through all twelve signs every day and Mars circles the zodiac in about two years, so no realistic birth pattern would move these shares far. An earlier 20,000-chart test in our kundli matching guide gave the same figures.
What is the difference between high and low Manglik?
There is no single classical scale. In modern practice the strength is judged in four ways:
- How many reference points are hit. Mars Manglik from only one of the Lagna, Moon and Venus is usually called mild or partial (anshik) Manglik. From two is stronger, and from all three is the strongest form.
- Which house Mars is in. Mars in the 7th or 8th (the houses that bear most directly on the marriage) is usually treated as the strongest form. Mars in the 12th, 1st, 2nd or 4th counts as milder. Some astrologers add weight when Saturn, Rahu, Ketu or the Sun sits with Mars. In our sample, 16.6 percent of charts had Mars in the 7th or 8th from the Lagna.
- Whether the Lagna is involved. Many astrologers give the Lagna the most weight, so Manglik from the Lagna and the Moon together is treated as a real dosha, while Manglik from Venus alone is barely mentioned.
- Whether any cancellation applies. A cancelled dosha is reduced or set aside, whatever its count.
Our Kundali grades it as Mild (one reference), Moderate (two) or High (all three). A recognised cancellation lowers a Moderate or High grade by one step. On our 100,000 charts the grades came out like this:
| Kundali grade | Share of charts |
|---|---|
| No Manglik dosha | 12.0% |
| Mild | 45.4% |
| Moderate | 32.5% |
| High | 10.0% |
If your Kundali says Mild, you are in the single largest group of all. High, all three reference points with no cancellation, is about one chart in ten. Even under the stricter "Lagna and Moon together" test, one chart in four qualifies. Apply the two most widely accepted cancellations below (Mars strong by sign and Jupiter's aspect) and that drops to 12.6 percent.
When is Manglik dosha cancelled?
Classical and regional texts list many exceptions, called Manglik dosha parihar or Kuja dosha nivarana. They differ in detail. These are the ones most often cited:
- Both partners are Manglik. This is the most widely accepted rule. When both charts carry comparable Mars placements, the dosha is considered balanced (dosha samya) and the match is judged on its other merits.
- Mars is strong by sign. Mars in its own signs (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted in Capricorn is said to act constructively rather than destructively. The Muhurta Chintamani is cited for a version of this rule for Mars in the 4th and 7th houses, which also includes Cancer, Mars's sign of debilitation.
- Jupiter joins or aspects Mars. Jupiter, the great benefic, in the same sign as Mars or casting its aspect on it (from the 5th, 7th or 9th sign) is widely held to neutralise the dosha. Some texts, the Jataka Parijata among them, extend this to Mercury.
- Specific sign and house pairs. Our Kundali also checks Mars in Aries in the 1st, in Scorpio in the 4th, in Capricorn in the 7th and in Sagittarius in the 12th. The Jataka Chandrika is cited for a broader exception when Mars is in a movable sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn).
- Some ascendants are exempt. Some lists exempt Cancer and Leo rising. For those two ascendants Mars rules both an angle and a trine (the 5th and 10th houses for Cancer, the 4th and 9th for Leo), which makes it a helpful planet for the chart.
We measured how far these rules reach. Of the 50,278 charts in our sample that were Manglik from the Lagna:
| Cancellation rules applied | Share of Lagna-Manglik charts cancelled | Uncancelled Manglik, share of all charts |
|---|---|---|
| None | 0% | 50.3% |
| Our Kundali's list (own sign, exaltation, the four sign and house pairs) | 23.6% | 38.4% |
| Plus Jupiter in the same sign or aspecting Mars | 49.7% | 25.3% |
| Plus Mercury in the same sign or opposite | 58.3% | 21.0% |
| Plus Venus or the Moon in the same sign or opposite | 70.9% | 14.6% |
Once a careful astrologer applies the two most widely accepted rules, strength by sign and Jupiter's aspect, about half of all Lagna Manglik charts are cancelled. The last two rows follow broader lists that count any benefic joining or opposing Mars. Many astrologers would also check that benefic's strength first, so treat those rows as the outer limit.
You may also have heard that Manglik dosha ends at 28. That is a popular belief, often explained by Mars "maturing" at that age. Nothing in your chart changes at 28, and you cannot read it in the placements, so do not plan a wedding date around it.
Is Manglik dosha part of the 36 Guna Milan points?
No. Guna Milan scores two charts out of 36 across eight kootas, and every one of them is read from the two Moons. Manglik dosha is checked separately, alongside the score, by comparing where Mars sits in each chart. A couple can score 30 out of 36 and still have a Manglik question to look at, or score 20 with no Manglik issue at all. Our kundli matching guide explains the eight kootas and how Nadi and Bhakoot dosha are cancelled.
The matching rule is simple in principle: two Manglik charts balance each other, and a Manglik chart with a non-Manglik chart calls for a closer look at cancellations. What matters is which rule your family's astrologer uses. Pairing our 100,000 charts at random into 50,000 couples:
| Rule used for both partners | Both Manglik | Only one Manglik | Neither |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lagna only, six houses | 25.3% | 50.0% | 24.7% |
| Lagna or Moon, six houses | 56.0% | 37.7% | 6.3% |
| Any of Lagna, Moon or Venus | 77.3% | 21.4% | 1.4% |
Under the Lagna-only rule, half of all random couples are a "one Manglik" pairing. Under the broadest rule, more than three couples in four are both Manglik. On the traditional view, their dosha is matched. The same couple can look like a problem or a perfect Manglik match depending on the rule, which is one more reason to ask how it was judged.
Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?
Yes. Families and astrologers do it all the time, and the tradition gives them the tools: check whether the dosha is cancelled, check its strength from all three reference points and read the rest of both charts. A careful astrologer looks at the 7th house and its lord, Venus, Jupiter and the dasha periods each person is running before saying anything about a marriage. Our guide to the seventh house explains what that house shows in a chart.
It also helps to keep the claim in proportion. We know of no controlled study that links Mars's house in a birth chart to how happy or long a marriage is. Even within Jyotish, Manglik dosha is a single placement weighed against a whole chart. A mild or cancelled Manglik placement on its own is not a reason to turn down someone you and your family otherwise feel good about.
What are the remedies for Manglik dosha?
The practices below are traditional and devotional. They are described as what people in the Jyotish tradition commonly do, not as guarantees of any outcome. None of them is required.
- Tuesday observance. Tuesday is Mangalvar, the day of Mars. Many people keep a fast or visit a temple on Tuesdays and chant a Mars mantra such as "Om Angarakaya Namah" (Angaraka is another name for Mars).
- Mangal dosha puja. Some families perform a Mars puja before the wedding. The Mangalnath Temple in Ujjain, regarded as the birthplace of Mars in the Matsya Purana, is well known for it.
- Kumbh vivah. In some communities a Manglik person is first ritually married to a clay pot, a banana tree or a peepal tree, so that the dosha is said to fall on the symbolic spouse. It is a family choice, and no one should be pressured into it.
- Red coral. Coral (moonga) is the gemstone traditionally linked to Mars. Traditional astrologers prescribe it only after studying the whole chart, because strengthening Mars is not always wise.
The remedy with the most common sense behind it is the one Mars itself asks for: patience, honest conversation and channelling energy into work, sport and shared goals. And if anyone tells you a dosha can only be removed by an expensive ritual, get a second opinion. The tradition does not ask families to pay their way out of fear.
How do I know if I am Manglik?
The quickest way is our free Manglik check inside the Kundali:
- Open the free Kundali and enter your date, time and place of birth.
- Go to the Doshas section. The Manglik (Kuja) card shows No, Mild, Moderate or High.
- Read the line beneath it. It names the house and sign Mars occupies from your Lagna and which reference points (Lagna, Moon, Venus) make you Manglik. Any cancellation that applies is listed underneath.
To check by hand, open the kundli chart and find Mars (Ma). Count the Lagna as house 1 and count forward sign by sign until you reach the sign Mars is in. If you land on 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12, you are Manglik from the Lagna. Repeat the count starting from the Moon's sign and from Venus's sign.
Your birth time matters. The Lagna changes sign about every two hours on average, so an hour's error can flip the Lagna result. The Moon changes sign only about every two and a quarter days and Venus more slowly still, so those two checks work even without an exact time. If your time is unknown, look at the Moon and Venus results and treat the Lagna result as uncertain.
Use a Vedic chart, not a Western one. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, which currently sits about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac of Western astrology, so Mars can fall in a different sign and house. Vedic vs Western astrology explains the difference.
The same Kundali page also shows your Sade Sati status. If Saturn's transit is part of the family conversation too, our Sade Sati 2026 and 2027 guide has every date. To see how two people relate beyond any single dosha, the free compatibility reading compares both full charts, including the Moon, Venus and Mars.
Frequently asked questions
Am I Manglik?
You are Manglik if Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of your Vedic birth chart, counted from the Lagna. Many astrologers also count from the Moon and Venus. Enter your birth date, time and place in the free Kundali at nataljunction.com/kundali and the Manglik card shows your grade, Mars's house and any cancellations.
What percentage of people are Manglik?
About half. On 100,000 random birth charts cast with our Kundali engine, 50.3 percent had Mars in a Manglik house from the Lagna, or 41.8 percent if the 2nd house is not counted. If the Lagna, Moon or Venus all count, 88.0 percent qualify from at least one. Being Manglik is common, not rare.
Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?
Yes. Traditionally the astrologer first checks two things: whether the dosha is cancelled (for example by Mars in its own or exaltation sign or by Jupiter's aspect on Mars) and how strong it is from the Lagna, Moon and Venus. A mild or cancelled Manglik placement is generally not treated as a reason to refuse a match. The whole chart matters more.
Is Manglik dosha part of the 36 guna points?
No. Guna Milan scores eight kootas out of 36, all read from the two Moons. Manglik dosha is checked separately by comparing Mars in both charts. When both partners are Manglik the dosha is traditionally considered balanced. When only one is, the astrologer looks for cancellations before advising the family.
Does Manglik dosha end after 28?
That is a popular belief, not a rule you can read in a chart. Nothing about Mars's house in your birth chart changes at 28. What does change the picture is a cancellation, such as Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn, Jupiter aspecting Mars or a partner who is also Manglik. Those apply at any age.
What is the difference between high and low Manglik?
Low or mild Manglik usually means Mars is in a Manglik house from only one of the Lagna, Moon and Venus. High means all three. Our Kundali grades Mild, Moderate or High and lowers the grade one step when a cancellation applies. In 100,000 test charts, 45.4 percent were Mild and 10.0 percent High.
