Eclipses 2027: The August 2 Total Solar Eclipse and Every Eclipse by Sign

Last verified October 2026

2027 has five eclipses: an annular solar eclipse on February 6, the August 2 total solar eclipse over Spain, Morocco and Egypt with up to 6 minutes 25 seconds of totality and three penumbral lunar eclipses. Exact times, degrees, where to see each one and what it means for your sign.

Eclipses 2027: The August 2 Total Solar Eclipse and Every Eclipse by Sign

2027 has five eclipses: an annular solar eclipse in Aquarius on February 6, a penumbral lunar eclipse in Virgo on February 20, a very slight penumbral lunar eclipse in Capricorn on July 18, a total solar eclipse in Leo on August 2 and a penumbral lunar eclipse in Aquarius on August 17. The headline is August 2. Its path runs from southern Spain and northern Morocco across North Africa to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, with about 6 minutes 25 seconds of totality at Luxor, which makes it the longest total solar eclipse of any year from 2010 to 2100. Every time and degree below is computed from the ephemeris and given in Universal Time (UTC) with Eastern, Pacific and UK conversions.

The sign degree is the degree of the new or full moon itself, the figure astrologers use. Greatest eclipse can fall a few minutes before or after the exact lunation, so the times here differ slightly from those on the full moon calendar 2027.

What makes the 2027 eclipse special?

Length. Among all 74 total solar eclipses from 2001 to 2100, only the eclipse of July 22, 2009 lasts longer. No total eclipse from 2010 to 2100 matches August 2, 2027. It is not the longest of the century, a claim that appears often online, because 2009 ran about a quarter of a minute longer.

The two are family. August 2, 2027 falls exactly one saros, the 18 year and 11 day eclipse cycle, after July 22, 2009, so it is the next eclipse in the same series. The series returns on August 12, 2045.

The length comes from geometry. The Moon is new only 3.7 hours after perigee, at 357,375 kilometres, so it looks close to as large as it ever gets. Earth passed its farthest point from the Sun four weeks earlier, on July 5, so the Sun looks small. A large Moon over a small Sun casts a wide shadow that takes a long time to pass over any one place.

Where is the August 2, 2027 total solar eclipse visible?

The path of totality reaches the coasts of southern Spain and northern Morocco at about 08:45 UTC, then runs east across North Africa, Egypt and the Red Sea to Arabia and Yemen. Computed totality for places inside the path, in local clock time:

PlaceTotality begins (local time)Length of totalitySun's height

Cadiz, Spain10:45 am2 minutes 53 seconds37 degrees

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia1:22 pm6 minutes 2 seconds76 degrees
Mecca, Saudi Arabia1:24 pmabout 5 minutes 10 seconds76 degrees
Sanaa, Yemen1:43 pm2 minutes 34 seconds67 degrees

Luxor sits almost on the centre line with the Sun nearly overhead, which is why it gets the longest totality of any city we checked. These durations come from our ephemeris model at sea level with a smooth lunar edge. Published figures can differ by a few seconds, and towns near the edge of the path, such as Malaga, are the most sensitive to that difference.

Outside the path the eclipse is partial. Seville sees about 98 percent of the Sun's disc covered, Aswan 99.8 percent, Tunis 97 percent, Cairo 95 percent, Lisbon 93 percent, Madrid 86 percent, Athens 78 percent, Rome 74 percent, Dubai 53 percent, Paris 51 percent and Mumbai 32 percent. A partial eclipse, however deep, never gets dark the way totality does, so the drive into the path is worth it.

Spain sees totality two summers running. The total eclipse of August 12, 2026 crossed northern and eastern Spain, with totality at Oviedo, Zaragoza, Valencia and Palma. The August 2, 2027 path clips the southern tip at Cadiz, Gibraltar and Malaga.

Can you see the 2027 eclipse from the US or the UK?

The US: no. Neither 2027 solar eclipse is visible from any US city we checked, from New York and Miami to Los Angeles, Seattle and Anchorage. The only corner of North America that sees anything is the far east of Canada, where the Sun rises over Halifax on August 2 with the last minutes of a small partial eclipse, over by about 6:19 am local time. Most of the eastern and southern US next sees a small partial eclipse on January 26, 2028.

The UK: a partial eclipse only. In London the Moon starts to cover the Sun at 9:03 am BST on August 2, reaches about 42 percent of the disc at 10:00 am and finishes at 10:59 am. Use certified eclipse glasses for every minute of a partial eclipse. Only during totality itself, inside the path, is it safe to look without them.

The February 6, 2027 annular solar eclipse

The Moon is new three days after apogee, at about 402,700 kilometres, too far away to cover the Sun, so a ring of sunlight stays visible around it. The ring path crosses Uruguay and the South Atlantic and reaches West Africa at sunset. The longest ring, about 7 minutes 47 seconds, falls over the ocean.

PlaceRing begins (local time)Length of the ringNote
Punta del Este, Uruguay12:35 pm5 minutes 25 secondsSun high, 70 degrees

Lome, Togo5:50 pm5 minutes 16 secondsSun very low
Lagos, Nigeria6:49 pm5 minutes 30 secondsSun under 1 degree, a ring at sunset

Montevideo (86 percent), Rio de Janeiro (84 percent), Buenos Aires (82 percent) and Santiago (62 percent) see partial phases. It is not visible from North America or the UK.

The three penumbral lunar eclipses of 2027

A penumbral lunar eclipse happens when the full Moon passes only through Earth's outer shadow. The Moon never turns red. At most it looks slightly dusky on one side, and the effect is easy to miss. 2027 has no total or partial lunar eclipse. The next one that reaches Earth's dark inner shadow is the partial lunar eclipse of January 12, 2028 (the evening of January 11 in North America).

EclipsePenumbral phase (UTC)EasternLengthMoon above the horizon in

August 17, Aquarius05:23 to 09:031:23 am to 5:03 am EDTabout 3 hours 40 minutesNorth and South America and Hawaii

The July 18 eclipse barely touches the shadow. One saros later, in 2045, there is no eclipse at all in its slot, which is what an eclipse family looks like as it fades out.

The 2027 eclipse axis: Leo and Aquarius

Eclipses happen near the lunar nodes, the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. The mean North Node entered Aquarius on August 18, 2026 and stays there until March 7, 2028, so 2027 is a full year with the North Node in Aquarius and the South Node in Leo. Both solar eclipses sit on that axis.

  • February 6 is a North Node eclipse. It falls about 3 degrees from the North Node in Aquarius. North Node eclipses are read as openings: something new arrives that you have to grow into.
  • August 2 is a South Node eclipse. It falls about 1 degree 37 minutes from the South Node in Leo. South Node eclipses are read as releases: something familiar completes, and it often feels like an ending before it feels like freedom.

The axis is not new. The annular eclipse of February 17, 2026 fell at 28 degrees of Aquarius and the total eclipse of August 12, 2026 at 20 degrees of Leo. Each solar eclipse since then has fallen several degrees earlier in the signs. The annular eclipse of January 26, 2028, at 6 degrees 11 minutes of Aquarius, is the last on this axis, and the story then moves to Cancer and Capricorn with the total eclipse of July 22, 2028 at 29 degrees 51 minutes of Cancer. Leo and Aquarius carry four solar eclipses across 2026 and 2027 and a fifth in January 2028.

When is eclipse season in 2027?

Two windows. The first runs from the February 6 annular eclipse to the February 20 lunar eclipse. The second runs from the July 18 lunar eclipse through the August 2 total eclipse to the August 17 lunar eclipse, a full month of three eclipses. Astrologers read the weeks around each window as the time when events speed up, so keep some flexibility in your plans for both.

Which zodiac signs are affected by the eclipse in 2027?

Ranked by how directly the year's eclipses touch each sign:

  1. Leo: the August 2 total eclipse falls in your sign, the most personal eclipse of the year for anyone, a week after Jupiter leaves your sign.
  2. Aquarius: the February 6 annular eclipse and the August 17 lunar eclipse both fall in your sign.
  3. Taurus and Scorpio: the Leo and Aquarius axis squares your sign, so the eclipses land on your home and career houses.
  4. Virgo and Capricorn: each hosts one penumbral lunar eclipse, February 20 in Virgo and July 18 in Capricorn.

What the 2027 eclipses mean for each sign

Read for your Sun sign and your rising sign, with houses counted whole-sign from your sign.

  • Aries: the eclipses cross your fifth house of romance and creativity and your eleventh house of friends. A creative project or a love story takes a new direction, and a friendship or group role ends cleanly.
  • Taurus: home and career. The February eclipse opens a door at work and the August eclipse closes a chapter at home, such as a move or a change in your family set-up.
  • Gemini: your third and ninth houses. A course, a trip or a belief opens in February, and an old way of talking or a local tie completes in August.
  • Cancer: your second house of money and your eighth house of shared money. A joint financial arrangement begins in February, and an old way of earning or spending ends in August.
  • Leo: the August 2 eclipse falls in your own sign, so this is your year. Your first and seventh houses are lit, and the way you show up changes along with your closest partnerships. The new start in February comes through someone else.
  • Virgo: the February 20 lunar eclipse falls in your sign, and the solar eclipses cross your sixth and twelfth houses. Work routines and health habits reset in February, and something you kept private is let go in August.
  • Libra: your fifth and eleventh houses, the same pair as Aries. In February a romance or a creative project begins, and in August a role in a group changes.
  • Scorpio: your fourth and tenth houses, the same pair as Taurus. Home and career pull in different directions. The February eclipse reshapes your private life and the August eclipse your public one.
  • Sagittarius: your third and ninth houses. Travel, study or publishing completes a chapter in August, and a new way of communicating or a new local base begins in February.
  • Capricorn: your second and eighth houses, and the faint July 18 lunar eclipse falls in your sign. Money you earn and money you share both get rebalanced.
  • Aquarius: two eclipses in your sign. February 6 is a new beginning about who you are, and August 2 in your seventh house completes a chapter in a partnership. The year asks you to stand on your own and still meet the other person halfway.
  • Pisces: your sixth and twelfth houses, the same pair as Virgo. In February a period of rest and reflection starts something new, and in August a work pattern or a health habit completes.

What to do with an eclipse

Do less than you think. Eclipse energy moves quickly, and the full picture rarely shows on the day. Note what happens within a few days on either side of each eclipse, set an intention at the February 6 annular eclipse and treat the August 2 eclipse as a release rather than a launch. The first eclipse window also holds the February 9 Mercury station, and the February 20 lunar eclipse falls in the middle of the first Mercury retrograde 2027, so review the February news before you act on it. The August 2 eclipse arrives a week after Jupiter enters Virgo, the end of the Jupiter retrograde 2026 to 2027 story and of the Jupiter in Leo year.

For every other date of the year, read the 2027 astrology calendar, and for the months that lead into it, the December 2026 astrology calendar. The 2026 eclipses that opened this axis are listed in the 2026 full moon calendar and in the transits hub. Last year's three Mercury retrogrades are in Mercury retrograde 2026.

Places inside the path of totality include Cadiz and Malaga in southern Spain, Gibraltar, Tangier in Morocco, Benghazi in Libya, Luxor in Egypt, Jeddah and Mecca in Saudi Arabia and Sanaa in Yemen. Most of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East see a partial eclipse. It is not visible from the United States.

Is the 2027 eclipse the longest of the century?

No. The total solar eclipse of July 22, 2009 lasted longer. August 2, 2027 is the longest total solar eclipse of any year from 2010 to 2100, with about 6 minutes 25 seconds of totality at Luxor in Egypt by our calculation. The two eclipses are one saros apart in the same series.

What time is the August 2, 2027 eclipse?

Greatest eclipse is at 10:06 UTC on August 2, 2027, which is 6:06 am Eastern, 3:06 am Pacific and 11:06 am BST. In Luxor totality begins at 1:01 pm local time, in Gibraltar at 10:45 am and in Tangier at 9:44 am.

Which zodiac signs are affected by the 2027 eclipses?

Leo and Aquarius most of all, since both solar eclipses fall on that axis: the August 2 total eclipse in Leo and the February 6 annular eclipse and August 17 lunar eclipse in Aquarius. Taurus and Scorpio feel them in the home and career houses, while Virgo and Capricorn each host one penumbral lunar eclipse.
