Mercury Retrograde 2027: Dates, Shadow Periods and Every Sign

Mercury is retrograde three times in 2027: from February 9 to March 3 (Pisces back into Aquarius), from June 10 to July 4 (Cancer back into Gemini) and from October 7 to October 28 (Scorpio back into Libra). Counting the shadow periods on either side, the three cycles cover January 25 to March 23, May 26 to July 19 and September 17 to November 13. Every station below is computed from the ephemeris for the tropical zodiac and given in Universal Time (UTC) with Eastern, Pacific and UK conversions. North America is on daylight time from March 14 to November 7, 2027 and the UK is on British Summer Time from March 28 to October 31.

Each 2027 retrograde follows the same shape: Mercury turns around in a water sign and backs into the air sign before it. So every cycle has two chapters, a feeling chapter and a thinking chapter, and the switch between them is a date worth marking. The dates in this table are UTC dates, and they are the same calendar dates in North America and the UK except where the time table below says otherwise.

Mercury retrograde 2027 shadow period: pre shadow and post shadow dates

The shadow is the stretch of the zodiac that Mercury covers three times. The pre-shadow opens when Mercury first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct. The post-shadow closes when it finally returns to the degree where it turned retrograde. Most people feel the build-up in the pre-shadow and the clean-up in the post-shadow, which is why a three-week retrograde can feel like eight.

Add the three cycles together and Mercury spends about 168 days of 2027 somewhere inside a retrograde or its shadow. That is close to half the year, and it is the best argument for planning around the stations rather than fearing the whole window.

The first Mercury retrograde of 2027: February 9 to March 3, Pisces into Aquarius

Mercury enters Pisces on February 1 (the evening of January 31 in North America) and stations retrograde at 5 degrees 59 minutes of the sign on February 9 at 12:35 pm Eastern. It is retrograde over Valentine's Day. On February 18 it slips back into Aquarius, and about four hours later it passes between the Earth and the Sun at 29 degrees 48 minutes of Aquarius. That inferior conjunction is the midpoint of the cycle, the moment the old information is fully visible and the new story has not yet been written.

The Pisces half is about the unspoken: a feeling you never named, a creative idea you shelved, an ending you did not grieve. The Aquarius half moves the review to friends, group chats, technology and the plans you made with other people. Mercury turns direct at 20 degrees 55 minutes of Aquarius on March 3 and clears the shadow on March 23, three days after the March equinox. This cycle also overlaps the first weeks of the year's Mars retrograde, which runs from January 10 to April 1, so frustration with slow progress is part of the weather.

The second Mercury retrograde of 2027: June 10 to July 4, Cancer into Gemini

The longest retrograde of the year, at a little over 24 days. Mercury stations at 6 degrees 22 minutes of Cancer on June 10 at 2:18 pm Eastern and backs into Gemini on June 26. Its meeting with the Sun falls on June 23 at 1 degree 40 minutes of Cancer, two days after the June solstice. Family conversations, the past, the home and old memories lead, then the Gemini chapter brings the classic retrograde trouble with messages, paperwork, siblings and short trips.

Mercury turns direct on July 4 at 3:40 pm Eastern, the afternoon of US Independence Day. Holiday travel that weekend sits on the station itself, so build in time for delays. It re-enters Cancer on July 12 and clears the shadow on July 19.

The third Mercury retrograde of 2027: October 7 to October 28, Scorpio into Libra

Mercury stations at 4 degrees 56 minutes of Scorpio on October 7 at 10:40 am Eastern and backs into Libra on October 16. It meets the Sun at 26 degrees 01 minute of Libra on October 19. Scorpio opens the cycle with secrets, shared money and the conversation you have been avoiding. Libra closes it with contracts, partnerships and the terms of a relationship. Mercury turns direct at 19 degrees 19 minutes of Libra on October 28, re-enters Scorpio on November 10 UTC (the evening of November 9 in North America) and clears the shadow on November 13.

It is the shortest retrograde of the year, at 21 days. Compare it with last autumn's Scorpio retrograde in the Mercury retrograde 2026 dates: in 2026 Mercury turned around at 20 degrees of Scorpio, in 2027 it turns at 5 degrees, so the 2027 cycle reviews the opening of Scorpio and the end of Libra instead of the heart of Scorpio.

Mercury retrograde 2027 signs affected

Every sign feels each retrograde in the house of the chart that holds the sign it falls in. A handful of signs feel 2027 more directly, ranked here by how close the retrogrades come to them.

1. Gemini. Mercury rules your sign and backs into it from June 26 to July 12, turning direct at 27 degrees of Gemini. The most personal Mercury retrograde of the year for anyone.
2. Virgo. Mercury also rules Virgo, so all three cycles touch your daily routines, health and work, even though none of them falls in your sign.
3. Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio. Mercury stations retrograde in your sign (February 9, June 10, October 7). The station is the strongest moment of the cycle, so expect the review to start with you.
4. Aquarius, Gemini and Libra. Mercury stations direct in your sign (March 3, July 4, October 28), which means the decision point, when the fog lifts, also happens in your sign.

What to do

• Edit, revise and finish. A retrograde is an editing phase, not a publishing one.
• Back up phones and laptops before each pre-shadow: January 25, May 26 and September 17.
• Reconnect with people you lost touch with, and reread old agreements before renewing them.
• Confirm every travel detail around July 4 and the June 26 sign change back into Gemini.
• Use the shadow ends (March 23, July 19 and November 13) as your green lights for launches.

What not to do

• Do not sign a major contract on a station day if you can move it by a week.
• Do not send the reactive message during the inferior conjunctions on February 18, June 23 and October 19, when the old story is at its loudest.
• Do not buy expensive electronics or a car inside the retrograde itself if it can wait.
• Do not read every glitch as a sign. Most of them are just glitches.

Is there a Venus retrograde with any of them?

No. There is no Venus retrograde at all in 2027, so none of the three Mercury cycles is doubled the way October 2026 was. The next Venus retrograde begins on May 10, 2028. The year's other big review is Mars, retrograde from January 10 to April 1, which overlaps the whole first Mercury cycle. The 2027 eclipses do touch the first two cycles. The February 6 annular solar eclipse falls inside the first pre-shadow, three days before Mercury stations, and the February 20 lunar eclipse falls in the middle of the first retrograde. The faint July 18 lunar eclipse lands one day before the second post-shadow ends. The August 2 total solar eclipse and the August 17 lunar eclipse fall in the clear stretch between the second and third cycles.

Three patterns stand out. 2028 is an all-air year: every Mercury retrograde begins and ends inside Aquarius, Gemini or Libra. 2029 has four Mercury retrogrades instead of the usual three, because the first station falls as early as January 7 and the last as late as December 22. And by 2030 the retrogrades have moved into earth signs, with Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn each hosting one.
