Fire, Earth, Air and Water Signs: The Elements and Modalities Explained

The fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. The earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. The air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Each sign also has a modality. Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are cardinal. Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius are fixed. Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are mutable. Element describes what a sign is made of: action, substance, ideas or feeling. Modality describes how it moves: starting, sustaining or adapting. Put the two together and you have the core meaning of every zodiac sign.

This guide covers each element and each modality, the twelve signs as a grid, why Aquarius is an air sign even though it carries water, how to count the element balance in your own birth chart and, from our study of 60,000 chart pairs, which element pairings actually score best together.

What are the four elements in astrology?

ElementSignsCore driveAt their bestUnder strain
FireAries, Leo, SagittariusTo act and to inspireBrave, warm, generous, quick to startImpatient, self-focused, burns out
EarthTaurus, Virgo, CapricornTo build and to make realReliable, practical, patient, skilledStubborn, cautious, all work
AirGemini, Libra, AquariusTo think, connect and exchangeCurious, fair, articulate, sociableDetached, restless, lives in the head
WaterCancer, Scorpio, PiscesTo feel and to bondEmpathic, loyal, intuitive, protectiveMoody, guarded, absorbs other people's feelings

The four elements come from Greek philosophy, where Empedocles described fire, air, water and earth as the roots of everything in the fifth century BCE. Astrologers of the Hellenistic period grouped the zodiac signs into four sets of three, called triplicities, matching each set to an element. The three signs of each element sit 120 degrees apart, the angle astrologers call a trine, which is why same-element signs are traditionally read as an easy fit.

Fire signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius

Fire is the element of action, appetite and belief. Fire signs act first and reflect later, warm the people around them and need something to be excited about. They are honest to the point of bluntness, and they cool off as quickly as they heat up.

  • Aries is cardinal fire: the spark. Aries starts things, competes and wants to be first.
  • Leo is fixed fire: the steady blaze. Leo commits, creates and wants to be seen and loved for it.
  • Sagittarius is mutable fire: the wildfire. Sagittarius spreads out toward travel, ideas and meaning. It hates to be fenced in.

Earth signs: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn

Earth is the element of the body, money, time and craft. Earth signs trust what they can touch and measure. They are slow to promise and good at keeping promises, and they show love through practical help rather than speeches.

  • Taurus is fixed earth: the field. Taurus builds comfort and security and does not like to be rushed.
  • Virgo is mutable earth: the workshop. Virgo refines, fixes and serves, always adjusting the details.
  • Capricorn is cardinal earth: the mountain. Capricorn sets long goals and climbs toward them with discipline.

Air signs: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius

Air is the element of the mind, language and relationships between people. Air signs need conversation, variety and space. They see patterns and perspectives others miss, and they can talk themselves out of a feeling before they have had it.

  • Gemini is mutable air: the messenger. Gemini collects information and people and connects them.
  • Libra is cardinal air: the diplomat. Libra starts relationships, weighs both sides and seeks harmony and fairness.
  • Aquarius is fixed air: the system builder. Aquarius holds firm ideals about the group, the future and personal freedom.

Water signs: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces

Water is the element of feeling, memory and intimacy. Water signs read the emotional temperature of a room before anyone speaks. They bond deeply, protect what they love and need time to trust.

  • Cancer is cardinal water: the tide. Cancer starts families and homes and takes care of people first.
  • Scorpio is fixed water: the deep well. Scorpio commits completely, keeps secrets and wants the truth underneath.
  • Pisces is mutable water: the ocean. Pisces dissolves boundaries through compassion, art and imagination.

What are cardinal, fixed and mutable signs?

The modalities, also called qualities or modes, describe each sign's tempo. They come from the seasons. In the tropical zodiac the Sun enters a cardinal sign at each equinox and solstice, sits in a fixed sign in the middle of each season and passes through a mutable sign as the season turns.

ModalitySignsPlace in the season (Northern Hemisphere)StyleStrengthBlind spot
CardinalAries, Cancer, Libra, CapricornOpens a season: spring equinox, summer solstice, autumn equinox, winter solsticeInitiatesLeadership, momentumStarts more than it finishes
FixedTaurus, Leo, Scorpio, AquariusThe middle of a seasonSustainsLoyalty, endurance, focusResists change
MutableGemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, PiscesCloses a season and prepares the nextAdaptsFlexibility, learning, rangeScattered, hard to pin down

In the Southern Hemisphere the seasons are reversed, so Aries season opens autumn there, but the signs keep their modalities: the scheme follows the equinoxes and solstices, which happen at the same instant everywhere. The ancient names were more literal. Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos (2nd century CE) calls the cardinal signs solstitial and equinoctial, the fixed signs solid and the mutable signs bicorporeal (double-bodied).

The 12 zodiac signs: element and modality grid

Every sign is one element crossed with one modality. No two signs share both, so the grid has exactly twelve cells.

FireEarthAirWater
CardinalAriesCapricornLibraCancer
FixedLeoTaurusAquariusScorpio
MutableSagittariusVirgoGeminiPisces

Read across a row and you see one tempo in four materials: cardinal fire charges ahead, cardinal earth sets a five-year plan, cardinal air opens a negotiation and cardinal water starts a family. Read down a column and you see one material at three speeds: Aries lights the fire, Leo keeps it burning and Sagittarius carries it somewhere new.

Why is Aquarius not a water sign?

Because elements are assigned by position, not by symbol. Aquarius is Latin for "water bearer", and the sign is drawn as a figure pouring water, but the elements run round the zodiac in a fixed order: fire, earth, air, water, then fire again. Aries is fire, Taurus earth, Gemini air and Cancer water. Then the cycle repeats twice more. Aquarius is the eleventh sign, which lands it on air, alongside Gemini and Libra, 120 degrees from each.

The image fits air better than it first seems. The water bearer is not in the water. The figure pours it out for everyone, which is the air-sign gift of sharing knowledge and ideas with the group. The same logic answers the related questions: Scorpio is water despite its fiery reputation, and Capricorn is earth despite its sea-goat symbol.

Which elements are compatible?

Traditional astrology gives a simple rule. Signs of the same element understand each other easily, because they share a trine. Fire and air work together, because air feeds fire. Earth and water work together, because water nourishes earth. Every other mix (fire with earth, fire with water, air with earth, air with water) is read as harder, because the two signs are square, quincunx or semi-sextile to each other.

We tested that rule against data. In our study of 60,000 generated chart pairs, our synastry engine scored every pair on their complete birth charts. Here is the average score for each of the ten possible element pairings, grouped by the elements of the two Sun signs:

RankElement pairingAverage score out of 100Chart pairs (n)Sun-sign pairings in the group
1Earth and earth85.23,9846
2Air and air85.03,9756
3Fire and fire84.83,3156
4Water and water84.63,2756
5Earth and water82.47,3289
6Fire and air82.38,2809
7Fire and water78.97,0959
=8Fire and earth78.67,5019
=8Air and water78.67,6569
10Earth and air78.37,5919

All 60,000 chart pairs are counted once. The average across the whole study is 81.1.

What the data says. The traditional rule holds in three clear tiers: the four same-element pairings at the top (84.6 to 85.2), the two complementary pairings in the middle (82.3 and 82.4) and the four mixed pairings at the bottom (78.3 to 78.9). Fire and water, the pairing folklore warns about most, is not last. Earth and air is, by a small margin.

How we computed it. Each of the 60,000 chart pairs belongs to one of 78 Sun-sign pairings. We assigned each pairing to an element pairing by the elements of its two Suns, then averaged the scores of every chart pair in the group, so a group's average is weighted by its number of chart pairs (n). The same-element groups include same-sign pairs such as Leo with Leo. Leaving those out, the same-element pairings still lead, at 84.0 to 84.8.

Read it with two cautions. First, our engine gives 30% of its score to elemental ease, comparing the elements of the two Suns, Moons and Venuses, so part of this pattern is built into the model by design. The table shows how much element matters inside a full-chart score, not a law of human relationships. Second, the gap from first to last is 6.9 points, while individual chart pairs inside a single Sun-sign pairing typically spread across 24.1 points. Your Moon, Venus, Mars and rising sign matter more than the element of your Sun. The best and worst match for every sign shows the same pattern sign by sign.

Do modalities affect compatibility?

A little, and in the opposite direction to elements. Two signs of the same modality but different elements are always square or opposite each other, the classic tension aspects. In the same study, those pairings averaged 79.0 across 14,673 chart pairs, against 81.3 for pairings of two different modalities (40,467 chart pairs). Two cardinal signs both want to lead, two fixed signs both dig in and two mutable signs can both drift. Same-sign pairs, which share both element and modality, are the exception and top the study at 85.8.

How do you find the element balance in your birth chart?

Your Sun sign is only one of ten planets and an Ascendant, and they are usually spread across several elements. To see your balance:

  1. List your placements. Get the sign of each planet and your rising sign from a free birth chart reading.
  2. Count each element. Give one point per planet. Some astrologers give the Sun, Moon and Ascendant two points each, because they are the big three of your personality. There is no single standard weighting, so pick one and use it consistently.
  3. Repeat for the modalities. Count cardinal, fixed and mutable the same way.
  4. Discount the outer planets. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto stay in one sign for years, so everyone born near you shares them. Many astrologers count them at half weight or leave them out.

Here is the count for Nina, the fictional person from our composite chart guide:

ElementAll ten planetsPersonal points only (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Ascendant)
Fire1 (Mars)2 (Mars, Leo Ascendant)
Earth4 (Moon, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune)1 (Moon)
Air1 (Venus)1 (Venus)
Water4 (Sun, Mercury, Jupiter, Pluto)2 (Sun, Mercury)

Counting all ten planets makes Nina look like an earth person. Three of those four earth planets are Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, which everyone born around 1990 shares. Her personal points are spread evenly, with a slight lean to fire and water. By modality, eight of her ten planets are cardinal (Cancer, Capricorn and Aries), which is a far stronger signature: someone who starts things.

What does a missing or dominant element mean?

A missing element is normal. We counted the elements in 102,272 birth charts generated with our engine (births from 1940 to 2009, one every six hours with a random minute, cast for 14 cities around the world):

What we countedShare of charts
At least one element with none of the ten planets23.1%
Five or more of the ten planets in one element32.8%
At least one element missing from the six personal points67.9%
Four or more of the six personal points in one element19.0%
Sun, Moon and Ascendant all in the same element6.2%

Two in three charts leave at least one element empty among the personal points. Astrologers read a missing element as something you seek in other people or develop deliberately rather than something you lack: a chart with no earth often admires practical people and learns structure on purpose. A dominant element is the reverse, a native language you speak fluently and sometimes too loudly. The 6.2% with Sun, Moon and rising sign in one element, about one chart in sixteen, tend to read as unusually pure examples of that element.

Elements in your own chart

Your Sun sign gives you one element. Your full chart gives you the mix. Run a free birth chart reading to see where your planets fall, then count them with the method above. To see how your elements meet someone else's, the compatibility tool compares the elements of both Suns, Moons and Venuses as part of a full-chart synastry score.

Frequently asked questions

What are the fire, earth, air and water signs?

The fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. The earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. The air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. The three signs of each element sit 120 degrees apart on the zodiac, an angle called a trine, which is why same-element signs are read as an easy fit.

What are cardinal, fixed and mutable signs?

They are the three modalities, which describe how a sign moves. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) start each season and initiate. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) fall mid-season and sustain. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) end each season and adapt. Each sign combines one modality with one element.

Why is Aquarius an air sign and not a water sign?

Elements are assigned by position, not by symbol. They repeat round the zodiac in the order fire, earth, air, water, so the eleventh sign, Aquarius, falls on air with Gemini and Libra. Aquarius means water bearer, but the figure pours water out for others, which fits air's role of sharing ideas and knowledge with the group.

Which zodiac elements are most compatible?

Same-element pairs score highest. In Natal Junction's study of 60,000 chart pairs, earth with earth averaged 85.2 out of 100, then air with air 85.0, fire with fire 84.8 and water with water 84.6. Earth with water (82.4) and fire with air (82.3) came next. Earth with air was lowest at 78.3, just below fire with earth and air with water.

How do I know which element is dominant in my birth chart?

List the sign of each planet and your rising sign, then count how many fall in fire, earth, air and water. Some astrologers give the Sun, Moon and Ascendant double weight and count Uranus, Neptune and Pluto at half weight or not at all, because those slow planets are shared by everyone born around the same time. The element with the most points is dominant.

Is it bad to be missing an element in my birth chart?

No. It is common. In 102,272 charts generated with Natal Junction's engine, 23.1% had no planet at all in at least one element, and 67.9% had an element missing among the six personal points. Astrologers read a missing element as a quality you look for in other people or build on purpose, not a flaw.
