Best and Worst Match for Every Zodiac Sign, Ranked Across 60,000 Chart Pairs

For almost every zodiac sign, the best match is its own sign, followed by the other two signs of its element. Every sign's two worst matches are a square or a quincunx: a sign 90 or 150 degrees away that shares neither its element nor its mode. That is what our synastry engine found when it scored 60,000 generated chart pairs. The highest-scoring pairing of all is Libra and Libra, at a mean of 87.5 out of 100. The lowest is Aries and Virgo, at 76.0.

How to read these rankings

Each number is a mean. The study generated 60,000 pairs of complete birth charts (birth moments from 1960 to 2005, every hour of the day, fourteen cities), scored every pair with the same engine that powers our compatibility tool, then grouped the results by the two Sun signs. The average across all 60,000 pairs was 81.1.

Three things to keep in mind:

• These are chart pairs, not couples. The births are generated, so a score describes chart geometry, never a real relationship.
• The range is the real story. Inside a typical pairing, individual chart pairs spread across 24.1 points from lowest to highest. A ranking of averages hides that spread.
• Ties are real. Scores are shown to one decimal place, as published. Where two pairings share a score, the ranking marks them as joint and, where it matters for a sign's list, we say which one led before rounding.

Which zodiac signs are most compatible? The pattern in one table

Group the 78 pairings by the angle between the two signs and a clear ladder appears.

The tiers barely overlap. The 22 highest-scoring pairings are all same-sign pairs or same-element trines. The sextiles come next. Oppositions and neighbouring signs fill the middle. And the 24 square and quincunx pairings occupy exactly the bottom 24 places in the table. We never told the engine which angles between Sun signs to prefer. It scores the angles between real planets in two whole charts, and the classical geometry fell out of the data on its own.

The three fire signs share Aries' speed, directness and appetite for adventure, so very little needs translating. Capricorn is a square: both are cardinal signs that want to steer, but fire moves on instinct while earth wants proof first. Virgo is a quincunx with no element, mode or polarity in common. Two Taurus partners make the second-highest pairing in the whole study, and the other earth signs follow, built on patience, loyalty and proof over time. Libra is the surprise here: both signs are ruled by Venus, yet as a quincunx they share no element or mode. The shared ruler does not lift the average. What zodiac signs should not be together?

None, on this evidence. Squares and quincunxes average lowest, but the gap between the best pairing and the worst is only 11.5 points, while the typical spread inside a single pairing is 24.1 points. Aries and Virgo, last on the table, produced chart pairs that scored as high as 88. Libra and Libra, first on the table, produced chart pairs as low as 80. A particular Aries and Virgo can outscore a particular Libra and Libra, and in the study that happened often.

A low average tells you where the friction usually sits, not whether two people should be together. Each pair page lists the specific friction points and what helps.

Why your Sun sign is only part of the answer

In the study the two Sun signs explained 24.3% of the variation in the full-chart score. The other 75.7% came from the parts of a chart a Sun sign cannot see. The Moon describes emotional rhythm. Venus and Mars set the romantic and physical register. The angles each person's planets make to the other's carry the fine detail, and the Ascendant shapes first impressions. None of that is visible from two birthdays.
