Capricorn Season 2026: Dates, Meaning and What It Brings Every Sign

Capricorn season 2026 begins on December 21, 2026 at 20:50 UTC, the exact moment of the December solstice. It ends when the Sun enters Aquarius on January 20, 2027 at 07:29 UTC. In North America that is 3:50 pm Eastern on December 21 to 2:29 am Eastern on January 20 (11:29 pm Pacific on January 19). It is the shortest sign season of the year, 29 days and about 10 hours, because the Earth reaches its closest point to the Sun on January 3. Inside it sit the closest full moon of 2026, a new moon in Capricorn and the start of Mars retrograde. Every date and time below is computed from the ephemeris for the tropical zodiac, not copied from a list.

When is Capricorn season 2026?

So the short answer to "when is Capricorn season" this year is December 21, 2026 to January 19, 2027 if you count the last full day, with the handover to Aquarius in the early hours of January 20 in most of the world. The changeover hour moves every year, so anyone born on December 21 or 22 or on January 19 or 20 can sit on either side of it. That is why a birth chart, not a calendar, settles your sign. Capricorn season dates in other years

The start date drifts by a few hours each year and resets with the leap-year cycle, so in this era Capricorn season starts on December 21 or 22 and ends on January 19 or 20.

In Universal Time the 2027 season begins on December 22, which is why some calendars print that date.

Why Capricorn season starts on the winter solstice

The Sun enters Capricorn at the instant it reaches its farthest point south, the December solstice. In the Northern Hemisphere that is the shortest day of the year, and from then on the days lengthen. Capricorn is a cardinal sign, one of the four that open a season. Its season opens winter. The symbolism follows the sky: the light is at its lowest, so the work is to build something that lasts until it returns. For the solstice itself, with the length of the day by city, read the Winter Solstice 2026 guide.

Capricorn season meaning

Capricorn is the earth sign ruled by Saturn, the planet of time, structure and consequence. When the Sun moves through it, the collective mood turns from Sagittarius's big ideas to the question of what you will actually do about them. It is the season of plans with dates attached, of budgets, of commitments made in writing and of respect earned slowly. It also asks what you are carrying out of duty rather than desire, which is why the season can feel heavy for some people and clarifying for others.

This year the meaning is sharpened by Saturn itself. Capricorn's ruler turned direct on December 10 at 7 degrees 56 minutes of Aries, eleven days before the season began, after a retrograde that started on July 26. So the season opens with its ruling planet moving forward again for the first time in four and a half months. Plans that stalled over the second half of 2026 can move.

Shortest season of the year

The Sun's apparent speed is not constant. The Earth moves fastest when it is closest to the Sun, and that point, perihelion, falls on January 3, 2027 at 02:07 UTC (9:07 pm Eastern on January 2). Because perihelion sits in the middle of Capricorn season, the Sun crosses Capricorn faster than any other sign: 29.44 days, against 31.45 days for Cancer season in the summer. Sagittarius (29.56 days) and Aquarius (29.59 days) are the next shortest.

What happens in Capricorn season 2026

The first three rows happen just before the season, and they set its tone.

Saturn direct, December 10. Saturn ended its retrograde at 7 degrees 56 minutes of Aries. It is now moving forward through Aries again and will not turn retrograde until August 9, 2027. For a sign ruled by Saturn this is the cleanest possible start. Saturn retrograde 2026 guide.

Jupiter retrograde from December 13. Jupiter turned retrograde at 27 degrees 1 minute of Leo and stays retrograde until April 13, 2027 (April 12 in the Americas). Growth during Capricorn season comes from finishing and consolidating, not from starting a dozen new things. Jupiter in Leo guide.

The Full Moon in Cancer, December 24. The only full moon of the season is exact at 01:28 UTC on December 24, which is 8:28 pm Eastern on December 23, at 2 degrees 14 minutes of Cancer. At 356,729 kilometres it is the closest full moon of 2026, a supermoon. The Moon reaches its closest perigee of the year seven hours later. It falls opposite the Sun in Capricorn, so it lights the axis between home and career, the private self and the public role, just as the holidays bring families together. Both the Sun and the Moon square Neptune, which makes feelings run high and boundaries blurry. Full Moon in Cancer December 2026 guide.

Mercury enters Capricorn, December 25. At 18:22 UTC on Christmas Day (1:22 pm Eastern), thinking turns practical. Mercury squares Saturn on December 30 and trines Mars on December 31, a useful pair for year-end planning: the square shows you the limits and the trine gives you the energy to work within them. Mercury moves on to Aquarius on January 13.

Sun conjunct Mercury, January 1. The Sun and Mercury meet at 11 degrees 3 minutes of Capricorn on New Year's Day. Mercury is moving direct, so this is a superior conjunction, a clear-headed moment to name what you want from 2027.

The New Moon in Capricorn, January 7, 2027. Exact at 20:25 UTC (3:25 pm Eastern) at 17 degrees 19 minutes of Capricorn. This is the new moon in Capricorn for January 2027 and the best start date of the season. The Moon is near its farthest point from Earth, about twelve hours after apogee, so this is a quiet new moon rather than a dramatic one. Set the goal you will still care about in July.

Mars retrograde, January 10. Mars stations retrograde at 10 degrees 26 minutes of Virgo at 13:01 UTC (8:01 am Eastern) and stays retrograde until April 1, 2027, backing into Leo on February 21. Effort turns to repair, review and finishing what is already underway. Expect delays in projects that depend on other people's speed.

Venus changes sign, January 7. Venus spends the first half of the season in Scorpio, where love is private and intense. It enters Sagittarius on January 7, which lightens the mood. Venus opposes Uranus and trines Neptune on January 9 and trines Saturn on January 15, a mix of surprise and steadiness in relationships.

How to use Capricorn season 2026

Use the two weeks before the new year to review, not to rush: Jupiter is retrograde, the full moon is emotional and the holidays crowd the calendar. From January 1, with the Sun and Mercury together in Capricorn, write the plan. Start it on or after the new moon of January 7. Expect Mars retrograde from January 10 to slow anything that relies on speed, so build in slack. When the Sun enters Aquarius on January 20, the season of structure hands over to the season of people and ideas. The first eclipse of 2027 follows on February 6.
