Black Moon Lilith: Find Your Lilith Sign and What It Means

Last verified October 2026

Black Moon Lilith is the far point of the Moon's orbit, read as the wild, unapologetic part of you. Find your Lilith sign by birth date and what it means.

Black Moon Lilith: Find Your Lilith Sign and What It Means

Black Moon Lilith is the point where the Moon's orbit reaches its farthest distance from Earth, averaged over time. In astrology it stands for the raw, untamed part of you that you were taught to hide: anger, desire, refusal and the parts of yourself that do not ask permission. It spends about nine months in each sign and goes all the way round the zodiac in 8.85 years, so your birth date is enough to find your Lilith sign. Look it up in the table below, then use your rising sign from the free birth chart reading to place it in a house.

What is Black Moon Lilith in astrology?

The Moon does not orbit the Earth in a circle. Its path is an ellipse, so once a month it reaches its closest point (perigee) and its farthest point (apogee). The ellipse itself slowly turns, so the direction of the apogee moves forward through the zodiac, completing a full circle in 8.85 years.

Astrologers call the averaged direction of that far point Black Moon Lilith. It is a point in space, not an object. Nothing is there to see. It is also not the asteroid 1181 Lilith, a separate body. Nor is it the "Dark Moon", a hypothetical second moon of the Earth that was once believed to exist. The Swiss Ephemeris documentation notes that modern celestial mechanics rules out such a body and that the "Dark Moon" name was later moved over to the lunar apogee.

The symbolism follows from the astronomy. The Moon describes your needs, comfort and the way you were nurtured, as the Moon sign guide explains. Lilith is the point where the Moon is farthest from Earth: the needs that drifted out of reach, the part of you that was too much for the people around you and learned to stay out of sight.

What is the difference between mean, true and osculating Lilith?

This is why two calculators can give you two different Lilith signs. There are three common versions.

  • Mean Lilith is the smooth, averaged position of the apogee. It moves forward at a steady 0.11 degrees a day and never turns retrograde. It is the version used in this guide.
  • True Lilith, also called osculating Lilith, is worked out from the shape the Moon's orbit has at one instant, as if the Sun were not pulling on it. Because the Sun's pull keeps reshaping the orbit, this point swings back and forth around the mean position by up to about 30 degrees within a month. In our calculation for 2026 it ranged from 30 degrees behind the mean point to 29 degrees ahead of it, and it regularly appears to move backwards.
  • Natural or interpolated Lilith follows the Moon's real monthly apogees and smooths between them. It stays within about 5 degrees of the mean.

The real apogees are a useful check. From 1960 to 2030 there were 941 actual lunar apogees, and the Moon's position at each one was on average 3.0 degrees from mean Lilith and never more than 5.7 degrees away. The true or osculating version strays much further, which is why the Swiss Ephemeris documentation calls its large monthly swing largely an artifact of treating the Moon's orbit as a simple ellipse.

Here are three recent checks, comparing the actual apogee nearest each of three mean Lilith sign changes:

Mean Lilith changes sign (UTC)Nearest actual apogee (UTC)Moon at apogeeMean Lilith at that momentGap

At the moment of a real apogee, the osculating point sits exactly on the Moon, so on those dates true Lilith and the real apogee agree. Between apogees true Lilith swings away again.

Which should you use? If you are starting out, use mean Lilith. It gives a stable sign for anyone born in the same nine-month window. If a calculator gives you a different sign from the table below, check whether it is set to true Lilith. Small differences of up to a day at a sign change also come from whether the point is measured along the Moon's tilted orbit or projected onto the ecliptic. This guide projects it, as the Swiss Ephemeris does.

How do I find my Lilith sign?

  1. Find your birth date in the table below. The row it falls in gives your mean Lilith sign.
  2. If you were born on a change date, check the time. Changes are given in UTC, and a sign change can fall on the previous or next day in your local time.
  3. For the house, get your rising sign from the free reading and count forward. With whole-sign houses, your rising sign is the 1st house and each following sign is the next house. Example: Leo rising, Lilith in Sagittarius. Leo 1, Virgo 2, Libra 3, Scorpio 4, Sagittarius 5. Lilith is in your 5th house.

The free reading does not show Lilith yet. The table is computed from the standard mean lunar apogee formula in Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms and agrees with the Swiss Ephemeris mean apogee to within 3 minutes on all 101 sign changes from 1958 to 2031.

What does Lilith mean in each sign?

  • Lilith in Aries: the suppressed part is raw anger and the drive to go first. You may have been called aggressive for ordinary self-assertion. Claiming it means acting on your own impulses without apologising for them.
  • Lilith in Taurus: the hidden hunger is for pleasure, comfort and ownership of your body. Shame can attach to wanting things or enjoying them. The work is to treat sensual pleasure as a right, not a reward.
  • Lilith in Gemini: the repressed voice. You may have been told you talk too much, ask the wrong questions or say what others will not. Claiming it means saying the unsayable, with wit.
  • Lilith in Cancer: the wild side of feeling and nurture. Needs, dependence or the role of caregiver can carry shame. The work is to need people openly and to mother or care on your own terms.
  • Lilith in Leo: the urge to be seen, admired and unapologetically central. You may have been punished for showing off. Claiming it means taking the spotlight without waiting to be invited.
  • Lilith in Virgo: the rebellion is against purity rules and being "good". Bodies, health and messiness can feel shameful. The work is to let imperfection exist and to serve only where you choose.
  • Lilith in Libra: the suppressed refusal to keep the peace. You may hold back desire or anger to stay liked. Claiming it means choosing yourself in a relationship, even when that disturbs the balance.
  • Lilith in Scorpio: the most intense placement by reputation. Desire, jealousy, power and taboo all live here. The wound is often about trust, control or sexuality that was shamed. Lilith in Scorpio people tend to see through pretence and to sense what others hide. The work is to own your intensity rather than either suppress it or let it control you, and to choose who earns your trust.
  • Lilith in Sagittarius: the untamed need for freedom, truth and belief of your own. You may have been shamed for questioning a faith or a family view. Claiming it means following your own philosophy out loud.
  • Lilith in Capricorn: the hidden ambition. Authority, power and success can feel forbidden or dangerous to want. The work is to want status openly and to build it on your own rules.
  • Lilith in Aquarius: the outsider who refuses to conform. You may have been punished for being odd. Claiming it means letting your strangeness lead, including in groups.
  • Lilith in Pisces: the suppressed sensitivity, imagination and spiritual hunger. Escapism and boundaries are the edge. The work is to honour your inner world without disappearing into it.

What does Lilith mean in each house?

The house shows where you were most likely to be told "not like that". Read it with your sign. If you need a refresher, see the twelve houses.

  • 1st house: your body, appearance and presence. People notice something untamed about you.
  • 2nd house: money, pleasure and self-worth.
  • 3rd house: speech, writing, siblings and ideas.
  • 4th house: home, family and the parent who shaped your inner life.
  • 5th house: sex, romance, creativity and play.
  • 6th house: work, daily routine and the body's needs.
  • 7th house: partners, marriage and contracts. Lilith here is often met through a partner first.
  • 8th house: intimacy, taboo, shared money and power.
  • 9th house: belief, travel and higher learning.
  • 10th house: career, public image and authority.
  • 11th house: friends, groups and causes.
  • 12th house: the hidden life, dreams and what you keep even from yourself.

Is Lilith the same as Chiron?

No. Chiron is a real icy body that takes about 50.6 years to circle the Sun and stays 2 to 9 years in each sign. Lilith is a calculated point on the Moon's orbit that circles the zodiac in 8.85 years and spends about nine months in each sign.

The meanings differ too. Chiron is the wound you learn to live with and turn into a way of helping others. Lilith is the part of you that was pushed away for being too much, and the work is not to heal it but to reclaim it. Where both sit near the same part of your chart, the two themes tend to show up together: a hurt that was also a punishment for being yourself.

Where does the name Lilith come from?

The name is older than astrology's use of it. A Hebrew word, lilit, appears once in the Bible, in Isaiah 34:14. Scholars disagree over whether it names a female demon or a night bird. The best-known story comes from the Alphabet of Ben Sira, a medieval text usually dated between the 8th and 10th centuries, where Lilith is Adam's first wife, made from the same earth, who refuses to be ranked beneath him and leaves Eden rather than submit. Astrologers later attached the name to the lunar apogee, and the refusal at the heart of that story became the meaning of the point.

How do I read Lilith in my own chart?

  1. Find your mean Lilith sign in the table.
  2. Count its whole-sign house from your rising sign.
  3. Note any of your planets in the same sign. The free reading lists the degree of each planet, so you can see which ones sit close to Lilith.
  4. Read sign and house as one sentence, for example "Lilith in Libra in the 7th: the part of me that will not keep the peace, met through partners".
  5. Ask where you shrink this part of yourself to stay acceptable, and where letting it out would cost less than you fear.

Lilith adds most when read alongside the rest of your chart, especially the Moon and Venus. The Venus sign guide covers desire and attraction, and the step-by-step guide to reading your birth chart puts the pieces together.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Black Moon Lilith sign?

Look up your birth date in a mean Lilith table. Lilith spends about nine months in each sign and circles the zodiac every 8.85 years, so your birth date gives the sign unless you were born on a change date. For the house, count from your rising sign to your Lilith sign using whole-sign houses.

What does Black Moon Lilith mean in astrology?

Black Moon Lilith is the averaged farthest point of the Moon's orbit from Earth. Astrologers read it as the raw, untamed part of you that you learned to hide: anger, desire, refusal and anything you were told was too much. Its sign shows the style of that wildness and its house shows where you were most pressured to suppress it.

What is the difference between mean Lilith and true Lilith?

Mean Lilith is the smooth, averaged lunar apogee and moves steadily forward at about 0.11 degrees a day. True or osculating Lilith is calculated from the Moon's orbit at a single instant and swings up to about 30 degrees either side of the mean within a month, sometimes appearing retrograde. Calculators can be set to either, so the two can give different signs.

Is Black Moon Lilith the same as Chiron?

No. Chiron is a real icy body discovered in 1977 that orbits the Sun every 50.6 years and spends 2 to 9 years in a sign. Black Moon Lilith is a calculated point on the Moon's orbit that spends about nine months in a sign. Chiron is read as a wound that becomes a gift, Lilith as a part of you to reclaim.

What does Lilith in Scorpio mean?

Lilith in Scorpio is read as one of the most intense placements. It ties the hidden, suppressed self to desire, jealousy, power, taboo and trust, often after an experience of control or shame around sexuality. People with it tend to see through pretence. The work is to own that intensity rather than hide it or let it run you.

How long does Lilith stay in a sign?

Mean Black Moon Lilith stays in each sign for 268 to 271 days (about nine months) and completes the zodiac in 8.85 years. It never turns retrograde. True or osculating Lilith moves irregularly and can briefly appear to go backwards, so its sign changes are less evenly spaced.
