Pluto in Aquarius 2024-2044: Dates, Meaning and What It Means for Every Sign
Last verified October 2026
Pluto settled in Aquarius on November 19, 2024 and stays until January 19, 2044. Every computed date, the 1778-1798 precedent and what it means for each sign.

Pluto entered Aquarius for good on November 19, 2024 at 21:06 UTC (4:06 pm Eastern) and stays there until January 19, 2044, apart from a short first visit to Pisces from March to August 2043. It first crossed into Aquarius on March 23, 2023, slipped back into Capricorn twice and only settled on its third crossing. Counting every pass, Pluto spends about 19 and a half years in Aquarius this cycle. The last time was 1777 to 1798, the era of the French Revolution, the US Constitution and the discovery of Uranus. Every date, time and degree below is computed from the ephemeris for the tropical zodiac, not copied from a list.
Pluto takes about 248 years to circle the Sun, so nobody alive has lived through a full Pluto in Aquarius before. This page gives the exact dates, what the transit means, what happened last time, who belongs to the Pluto in Aquarius generation and what it means for your sign. For the short overview of all three outer planet sign changes, read the 2026 outer planet shift. This is the full Pluto chapter.

So the honest answer to "how long is Pluto in Aquarius" depends on what you count. From the final ingress to the final exit is about 19 years and 2 months. Including the 2023 and 2024 visits and minus the 2043 dip into Pisces, Pluto spends 7,128 days in Aquarius, about 19.5 years. Most guides round this to "2024 to 2044", which is fair.

What happened with the 2024 Pluto retrograde?
The 2024 retrograde is why so many people are confused about when Pluto "really" entered Aquarius. Pluto re-entered Aquarius on January 21, 2024 (January 20 in the Americas), turned retrograde on May 2, 2024 at 2 degrees 6 minutes of Aquarius and backed over the line into Capricorn on September 1, 2024. It turned direct on October 12, 2024 (October 11 in the Americas) at 29 degrees 38 minutes of Capricorn and crossed into Aquarius for the final time on November 19.
Astrologers read that back-and-forth as a long handover. Themes that surfaced in 2023 got a second airing in 2024 and only settled from late November 2024. If something in your life started in spring 2023, paused that summer and came back in early 2024, that is the rhythm Pluto was keeping.
What does Pluto in Aquarius mean?
Pluto is the planet of power, control, loss and regeneration. It works slowly and from underneath: whatever it touches gets stripped to its foundations and rebuilt. Aquarius is the fixed air sign, traditionally ruled by Saturn and in modern astrology by Uranus. It governs groups, networks, technology, science, equality and the future, along with its shadow: detachment, cold rationality and the tyranny of the crowd.
Put them together and the theme is the transformation of collective power. Where Pluto in Capricorn (2008 to 2024) tested institutions, hierarchies and the people at the top, Pluto in Aquarius tests the network itself: who owns information, who writes the rules of the platforms we live on and whether power concentrated in systems can be spread back out to people.
The themes astrologers return to most:
- Technology and machine intelligence. Who builds it, who controls it and what it does to work, privacy and truth.
- Collective power. Movements, unions, online crowds and decentralised organising, plus the backlash against them.
- Rights and equality. Aquarius asks what a fair society looks like. Pluto forces the question rather than discussing it.
- Surveillance and control. The shadow of Aquarius is the system that knows everything about you. Pluto exposes it and fights over it.
- Belonging. Which groups you actually belong to, and which ones you joined out of habit.
None of this arrives on a single day. Pluto works over decades, so the first few years mostly show where the pressure will build.
What happened the last time Pluto was in Aquarius?
Pluto first entered Aquarius on April 4, 1777, dipped back twice and settled on December 1, 1778. It left for good on December 26, 1798, after a first visit to Pisces from April to July 1797. Events from those two decades:
| Date | Event | Pluto |
|---|---|---|
| March 13, 1781 | William Herschel discovers Uranus, the modern ruler of Aquarius | 6 degrees Aquarius |
| September 3, 1783 | Treaty of Paris ends the American Revolutionary War | 8 degrees Aquarius |
| November 21, 1783 | First crewed free flight, in a Montgolfier hot-air balloon over Paris | 7 degrees Aquarius |
| September 17, 1787 | The US Constitution is signed in Philadelphia | 14 degrees Aquarius |
| July 14, 1789 | Storming of the Bastille opens the French Revolution | 18 degrees Aquarius |
| August 26, 1789 | France adopts the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen | 17 degrees Aquarius |
| August 22, 1791 | The uprising that begins the Haitian Revolution | 20 degrees Aquarius |
| 1792 | Mary Wollstonecraft publishes A Vindication of the Rights of Woman | about 20 degrees Aquarius |
| May 14, 1796 | Edward Jenner tests the first smallpox vaccine | 29 degrees Aquarius |
Astrologers read that list as Pluto in Aquarius at full strength: power taken from monarchs and claimed in the name of citizens, written rights, a scientific leap in medicine and humans leaving the ground for the first time. The same era also produced the Terror in France, which is the Aquarius shadow in plain sight: an ideal of equality enforced by a machine that devoured its own.
One correction you will see repeated online: the US Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776) was signed with Pluto at 27 degrees of Capricorn, not in Aquarius. That is why the United States had its Pluto return in 2022, before this transit began.
The visit before that ran from 1532 to 1553, the years in which Copernicus published his Sun-centred model of the cosmos and Vesalius published his anatomy, both in 1543.
Pluto in Aquarius in 2026 and 2027: where is it now?
Pluto is moving through the first degrees of Aquarius. It turned retrograde on May 6, 2026 at 5 degrees 31 minutes and turned direct on October 16, 2026 at 02:23 UTC (10:23 pm Eastern on October 15) at 3 degrees 4 minutes. Our Pluto retrograde 2026 guide covers that season. Each year Pluto advances about one and a half to two degrees, so the yearly retrograde lands a little further on:
| Year | Pluto turns retrograde | Degree | Pluto turns direct | Degree |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | May 4 | 3 degrees 49 minutes Aquarius | Oct 14 (Oct 13 in the Americas) | 1 degree 22 minutes |
| 2026 | May 6 | 5 degrees 31 minutes | Oct 16 (Oct 15 in the Americas) | 3 degrees 4 minutes |
| 2027 | May 8 | 7 degrees 11 minutes | Oct 18 (Oct 17 in the Americas) | 4 degrees 45 minutes |
| 2028 | May 9 | 8 degrees 49 minutes | Oct 19 (Oct 18 Pacific) | 6 degrees 24 minutes |
| 2029 | May 11 (May 10 Pacific) | 10 degrees 27 minutes | Oct 21 (Oct 20 in the Americas) | 8 degrees 3 minutes |
| 2030 | May 12 (May 13 in the UK and India) | 12 degrees 4 minutes | Oct 23 (Oct 22 in the Americas) | 9 degrees 40 minutes |
Pluto reaches the middle of Aquarius (15 degrees) in 2033 and the last degree in 2042.
Which outer planet aspects shape Pluto in Aquarius?
Pluto is slow, so the faster outer planets set the timing of its loudest moments. These exact aspects fall inside the transit:
| Date (UTC) | Aspect | Degrees |
|---|---|---|
| Mar 28, 2026 | Saturn sextile Pluto | 5 degrees 10 minutes Aries and Aquarius |
| Jul 18, 2026 to May 10, 2028 | Uranus trine Pluto, exact five times | 3 to 9 degrees Gemini and Aquarius |
| Jul 20, 2026 | Jupiter opposite Pluto | 4 degrees 26 minutes Leo and Aquarius |
| Jul 24, 2026 to Feb 28, 2032 | Neptune sextile Pluto, exact 13 times | 3 to 14 degrees Aries and Aquarius |
| Jun 24, 2028; Nov 15, 2028; Mar 29, 2029 | Saturn square Pluto | 6 to 10 degrees Taurus and Aquarius |
| Feb 4, 2033 | Jupiter conjunct Pluto | 14 degrees 50 minutes Aquarius |
| Oct 17, 2035; Jan 1, 2036; Jul 28, 2036 | Saturn opposite Pluto | 17 to 20 degrees Leo and Aquarius |
The Uranus trine and the Neptune sextile are the backdrop of the first decade: the three slowest planets are in friendly contact, which astrologers read as change that can be channelled rather than only suffered. The Saturn square of 2028 and 2029 and the Saturn opposition of 2035 and 2036 are the stress tests, when systems built under Pluto in Aquarius meet hard limits. The Jupiter conjunction of February 2033 is the expansion point at the middle of the sign. The Uranus side of this picture is in our Uranus in Gemini guide, and the Neptune side is in Neptune in Aries 2026-2039.
What is the Pluto in Aquarius generation?
The Pluto in Aquarius generation is everyone born with Pluto in Aquarius: in short windows from March 23 to June 11, 2023 and January 21 to September 1, 2024, then continuously from November 19, 2024 to January 19, 2044, except for births from March 9 to September 1, 2043, which have Pluto in Pisces. Every child born from late 2024 onward belongs to it. The span lines up closely with the demographic label Generation Beta, which the Australian researcher Mark McCrindle uses for births from 2025 to 2039.
In astrology Pluto's sign describes a generation more than a person, because everyone born within about two decades shares it. Astrologers expect this cohort to treat networks and machine intelligence as ordinary infrastructure, to be unusually alert to who controls the systems around them and to organise collectively by default. Remember that this is interpretation, not prediction about any individual child.
What makes it personal is the house and the degree. Pluto's degree by birth year:
| Born in | Pluto's degree range in Aquarius |
|---|---|
| 2025 | about 1 to 4 degrees |
| 2026 | about 3 to 6 degrees |
| 2027 | about 4 to 7 degrees |
| 2028 | about 6 to 9 degrees |
| 2030 | about 9 to 12 degrees |
| 2035 | about 17 to 20 degrees |
| 2040 | about 24 to 27 degrees |
The exact degree, and the house that holds it, are in a free birth chart reading.
Pluto in Aquarius in each house and for every sign
The house that holds Aquarius in your chart is where Pluto works for the next two decades. With whole-sign houses, that depends on your rising sign, so read your rising sign first and your Sun sign second. If you do not know your rising sign, our rising sign guide explains why it needs a birth time.
- Aquarius (1st house): Pluto crosses your first house, the most personal placement. Identity, body and the way you present yourself get rebuilt over many years. What to do: drop the version of yourself you have outgrown on purpose, before circumstances drop it for you.
- Capricorn (2nd house): money, possessions and self-worth. Income sources can change completely and so can what you value. What to do: build earnings you control directly and cut financial dependence where you can.
- Sagittarius (3rd house): speaking, writing, learning, siblings and your local world. Your voice gets sharper and some conversations change relationships for good. What to do: learn a demanding skill and say the true thing plainly.
- Scorpio (4th house): home, family and roots. Pluto in the 4th can mean a move, a family secret surfacing or rebuilding the private foundations of your life. Pluto is your modern ruler, so this lands close to home. What to do: deal with the family pattern at its root rather than managing the symptoms.
- Libra (5th house): romance, children and creative work. Love and creativity become intense and transformative. What to do: take one creative project seriously enough to let it change you.
- Virgo (6th house): daily work, routines and health. Jobs and habits get overhauled, sometimes through technology changing how your work is done. What to do: treat your health as a long project and automate the routines that drain you.
- Leo (7th house): partnerships, marriage, contracts and open rivals. Pluto sits opposite your sign, so power dynamics with others come to the surface. What to do: insist on equal partnerships and walk away from arrangements built on control.
- Cancer (8th house): shared money, debt, inheritance and intimacy, Pluto's natural house. Deep psychological change and big questions about trust and joint finances. What to do: get debts and shared assets in writing and face the fear you keep postponing.
- Gemini (9th house): beliefs, study, travel, publishing and law. A worldview gets dismantled and rebuilt. What to do: study something that challenges what you think you know.
- Taurus (10th house): career, status and reputation, the most public placement. Your career can transform completely and your public role gets bigger or changes direction. Pluto squares your sign, so expect pressure from authority. What to do: build a reputation on a skill no one can take away.
- Aries (11th house): friends, groups, networks and long-range goals. Group dynamics and who you build with change, and so do your hopes. What to do: invest in the few alliances that share your goals and leave the groups that only drain you.
- Pisces (12th house): solitude, the unconscious, endings and hidden matters. An inner, often private transformation before Pluto reaches your sign in 2043. What to do: therapy, rest and honest reflection pay off more than outward pushing.
Your Sun sign reading uses the same list: a Taurus Sun has Pluto in the 10th from the Sun, and so on. The rising sign is the sharper of the two.
What should you do during Pluto in Aquarius?
Pluto rewards people who cooperate with change rather than resist it. Four practical moves hold for every sign:
- Find your Pluto house. Open the free birth chart reading and enter your birth date, time and place. Note which house holds Aquarius.
- Check natal planets in Aquarius. If you have a planet in the first few degrees of Aquarius, Pluto has already crossed it. If your planet sits later in the sign, the degree table above tells you roughly when Pluto arrives.
- Mark the stations. Pluto's retrograde and direct stations, each May and October, are the weeks when its themes feel loudest. The 2027 astrology calendar lists the 2027 dates.
- Watch the Saturn contacts. Saturn in Aries is sextile Pluto in 2026 and square it in 2028 and 2029. The Saturn in Aries guide explains Saturn's side.
Pluto is not punishment. It removes what has stopped working so something truer can take its place. The slower you let it work, the less it has to force.
Frequently asked questions
When did Pluto enter Aquarius?
Pluto first entered Aquarius on March 23, 2023, retrograded back into Capricorn on June 11, 2023, re-entered on January 21, 2024 and slipped back again on September 1, 2024. It entered Aquarius for good on November 19, 2024 at 21:06 UTC, which was 4:06 pm Eastern. It stays there until January 2044.
How long is Pluto in Aquarius?
About 19 to 20 years. From the final ingress on November 19, 2024 to the final exit on January 19, 2044 is just over 19 years. Counting the 2023 and 2024 visits and leaving out a short dip into Pisces from March to August 2043, Pluto spends about 7,128 days, or 19.5 years, in Aquarius this cycle.
What does Pluto in Aquarius mean?
Pluto in Aquarius is the transformation of collective power. Pluto strips things to their foundations and rebuilds them, and Aquarius rules networks, technology, groups and equality. Astrologers expect two decades of upheaval around who controls information and technology, how people organise and what fair power looks like, along with its shadow of surveillance and control.
When was Pluto last in Aquarius?
Pluto was last in Aquarius from April 1777 to December 1798, settling there for good on December 1, 1778. That span covers the end of the American Revolutionary War, the US Constitution, the French Revolution, the start of the Haitian Revolution, the discovery of Uranus in 1781 and the first smallpox vaccine in 1796.
What is the Pluto in Aquarius generation?
It is everyone born with Pluto in Aquarius, which means most births from November 19, 2024 to January 19, 2044, plus short windows in 2023 and 2024. It overlaps closely with the label Generation Beta, used for births from 2025 to 2039. Astrologers expect this generation to treat networks and machine intelligence as ordinary and to question who controls them.
Which house is Pluto in Aquarius in my chart?
It is the house that holds Aquarius, which depends on your rising sign. With whole-sign houses, Aquarius rising puts Pluto in the 1st house, Capricorn rising the 2nd, Sagittarius rising the 3rd and so on backward around the zodiac to Pisces rising, which puts it in the 12th. A free birth chart with your exact birth time shows it.
