Total Solar Eclipse August 2, 2027: Path, Times and What It Means for Your Sign
Last verified October 2026
The August 2, 2027 total solar eclipse crosses Spain, North Africa and Arabia, with up to 6 minutes 23 seconds of totality near Luxor. Times, path and signs.

The total solar eclipse of Monday, August 2, 2027 reaches greatest eclipse at 10:06 UTC (6:06 am Eastern, 11:06 am in the UK, 3:36 pm in India), with up to 6 minutes 23 seconds of totality in the Egyptian desert near Luxor, according to NASA. The path of totality crosses southern Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Astrologically it is a South Node new moon at 9 degrees 55 minutes of Leo. It is the most important eclipse of 2027 for anyone with Leo, Aquarius, Taurus or Scorpio prominent in the chart. Below are the times in every major zone, the cities inside the path, how to watch safely and what the eclipse degree means for each sign.

The contact times are NASA's. The exact new moon, the moment astrologers use, falls a minute earlier, at 10:05 UTC, at 9 degrees 55 minutes of Leo. At the instant of greatest eclipse it is 12:06 pm in Spain, 1:06 pm in Egypt and Saudi Arabia and 11:06 am in Morocco, but local eclipse times vary along the path, so use the city table below for where you will be.
Where is the 2027 eclipse path of totality?
NASA lists the countries inside the path as southern Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The Moon's dark shadow is about 258 kilometres wide at greatest eclipse. It touches down over the Atlantic, reaches land at the Strait of Gibraltar in the morning, crosses North Africa through the late morning and reaches Arabia in the early afternoon, then leaves land over the Indian Ocean.
Computed totality for places inside the path, in local clock time on August 2:
| Place | Totality begins | Length of totality | Sun's height |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cadiz, Spain | 10:45 am | 2 minutes 53 seconds | 37 degrees |
| Tarifa, Spain | 10:44 am | 4 minutes 41 seconds | 38 degrees |
| Gibraltar | 10:45 am | 4 minutes 29 seconds | 38 degrees |
| Malaga, Spain | 10:48 am | 1 minute 51 seconds | 39 degrees |
| Tangier, Morocco | 9:44 am | 4 minutes 54 seconds | 38 degrees |
| Tetouan, Morocco | 9:45 am | 4 minutes 55 seconds | 38 degrees |
| Oran, Algeria | 9:50 am | 5 minutes 11 seconds | 43 degrees |
| Sfax, Tunisia | 10:08 am | 5 minutes 43 seconds | 56 degrees |
| Benghazi, Libya | 11:27 am | 6 minutes 13 seconds | 68 degrees |
| Luxor, Egypt | 1:01 pm | 6 minutes 25 seconds | 82 degrees |
| Qena, Egypt | 1:01 pm | 6 minutes 14 seconds | 81 degrees |
| Jeddah, Saudi Arabia | 1:22 pm | 6 minutes 2 seconds | 76 degrees |
| Mecca, Saudi Arabia | 1:24 pm | 5 minutes 11 seconds | 75 degrees |
| Abha, Saudi Arabia | 1:34 pm | 6 minutes 8 seconds | 71 degrees |
| Sanaa, Yemen | 1:43 pm | 2 minutes 34 seconds | 67 degrees |
These durations come from our ephemeris model at sea level with a smooth lunar edge, so they can differ from published figures by a few seconds. Places near the edge of the path, such as Malaga and Cadiz, are the most sensitive. Tripoli in Libya sits right on the northern edge and gets well under a minute, so a short drive toward the centre line pays off anywhere near the edge.
Just outside the path the eclipse is deep but partial: Aswan 99.8 percent of the Sun's disc covered, Hurghada 98.5 percent, Seville 98.3 percent, Tunis 97 percent, Cairo 95 percent, Medina 94.5 percent and Lisbon 93 percent. Even 99 percent is not totality. The sky only goes dark, and the corona only appears, inside the path.
How long is totality on August 2, 2027?
Up to 6 minutes 23 seconds, the greatest duration in NASA's figures, on the centre line in southern Egypt. NASA puts the point of greatest eclipse at 25 degrees 29.6 minutes north, 33 degrees 13.2 minutes east, about 60 kilometres east-southeast of Luxor, with the Sun 82 degrees high and 6 minutes 22.6 seconds of totality there.
That makes it the longest total solar eclipse since July 22, 2009, which lasted 6 minutes 39 seconds. The two belong to the same family, Saros 136, whose eclipses repeat every 18 years and 11 days and have been getting shorter: 6 minutes 53 seconds in 1991, 6 minutes 39 seconds in 2009, 6 minutes 23 seconds in 2027 and 6 minutes 6 seconds in 2045. August 2, 2027 is member 38 of the 71 eclipses in the series.
The length comes from geometry. The Moon is new only 3.7 hours after its closest approach of the month, at 357,375 kilometres, so it looks large. The Earth passed aphelion, its farthest point from the Sun, on July 5, so the Sun looks small. NASA gives the eclipse magnitude as 1.079, meaning the Moon's disc is almost 8 percent wider than the Sun's at greatest eclipse. A big Moon over a small Sun casts a wide shadow that takes a long time to pass any one place, and near Luxor the shadow also travels with the Sun almost overhead.
Can you see the 2027 total eclipse from the US, the UK or India?
United States: essentially no. NASA notes that a partial eclipse reaches parts of eastern Canada and northern Maine, and our calculation shows why it barely counts: in far northern Maine and in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Sun rises with only the last few minutes of a small partial eclipse left, over by about 5:20 am in Maine and 6:20 am in Halifax. The rest of the US sees nothing. Most of the eastern and southern US next sees a partial eclipse on January 26, 2028.
United Kingdom: a partial eclipse. In London the Moon starts to cover the Sun at 9:03 am BST, reaches about 42 percent of the disc at 10:00 am and finishes at 10:59 am. Paris sees about 51 percent, Rome 74 percent and Athens 78 percent.
India: a partial eclipse in the late afternoon. Mumbai sees about 32 percent of the Sun covered at 4:41 pm IST, Bengaluru about 39 percent at 4:53 pm, Delhi about 8 percent at 4:29 pm and Kolkata about 6 percent at 4:43 pm. In the Gulf, Dubai sees about 53 percent.
How to watch the eclipse safely
NASA's rule is simple: look at the Sun only through eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer that meets the ISO 12312-2 standard, for every minute of the partial phases. You may take them off only during totality, when the Moon completely hides the Sun's bright face and you can no longer see any of it through the glasses. Put them back on the moment the first sliver of sunlight returns. Never look through a camera, binoculars or a telescope without a proper solar filter fitted to the front of the optics. Outside the path, the eclipse is partial from start to finish, so the glasses never come off.
What sign is the August 2, 2027 solar eclipse in?
Leo. The Sun and Moon meet at 9 degrees 55 minutes of Leo at 10:05 UTC, and this degree is the eclipse point astrologers work with for the next six months to a year.
It is a South Node eclipse. The mean lunar node sits at 11 degrees 32 minutes of Aquarius (North) and Leo (South) at the moment of the eclipse, so the eclipse falls 1 degree 37 minutes from the South Node. The Moon itself crosses the ecliptic at 11 degrees 29 minutes of Leo two and a half hours later. South Node eclipses are traditionally read as releases rather than launches: something familiar completes or a role is outgrown, and the ending often makes sense only in hindsight. The February 6, 2027 annular eclipse in Aquarius was the North Node partner, the opening. For the node itself, read North Node in Aquarius 2026 to 2028.

The sky at the moment of the eclipse
| Planet | Position | Link to the eclipse at 9 degrees 55 minutes Leo |
|---|---|---|
| Venus | 7 degrees 16 minutes Leo | Conjunct, about 2.6 degrees: love, money and self-worth sit inside the eclipse |
| Mars | 10 degrees 42 minutes Libra | Sextile, under 1 degree: courage and quick decisions are supported |
| Uranus | 9 degrees 9 minutes Gemini | Sextile, under 1 degree: sudden, freeing changes |
| Neptune | 6 degrees 31 minutes Aries, retrograde | Trine, wide (3.4 degrees) |
| Pluto | 5 degrees 52 minutes Aquarius, retrograde | Opposite, wide (4.1 degrees): a pull between personal will and the group |
| Jupiter | 1 degree 30 minutes Virgo | Entered Virgo on July 26, a week before the eclipse |
| Saturn | 27 degrees 50 minutes Aries | Almost stationary, turning retrograde on August 9 at 27 degrees 53 minutes |
| Mercury | 29 degrees 56 minutes Cancer | Last degree of Cancer, entering Leo 46 minutes later |
Two exact sextiles from Mars and Uranus make this a more lively eclipse than most South Node eclipses: the release can come fast and feel like relief. Venus inside the eclipse puts love, pleasure and money at the centre of what changes. Jupiter has just left Leo, so the eclipse closes the year of Jupiter in Leo and opens the year covered in Jupiter in Virgo 2027 to 2028.
The Leo and Aquarius eclipse series
Eclipses travel backward through the zodiac in pairs of opposite signs, following the lunar nodes. The current series on the Leo and Aquarius axis runs from early 2026 to early 2028:
| Date | Eclipse | Degree |
|---|---|---|
| February 17, 2026 | Annular solar | 28 degrees 50 minutes Aquarius |
| August 12, 2026 | Total solar | 20 degrees 2 minutes Leo |
| February 6, 2027 | Annular solar | 17 degrees 38 minutes Aquarius |
| August 2, 2027 | Total solar | 9 degrees 55 minutes Leo |
| January 26, 2028 | Annular solar | 6 degrees 11 minutes Aquarius |
After January 2028 the solar eclipses move to Cancer and Capricorn, starting with the total eclipse of July 22, 2028 at 29 degrees 51 minutes of Cancer. So August 2, 2027 is the last total eclipse in Leo of this series. The next total solar eclipse in Leo is August 12, 2045. Two more anchors help with personal timing. The total eclipse of August 1, 2008 fell at 9 degrees 32 minutes of Leo, almost the same degree, so think back nineteen years for an echo. And the Great American Eclipse of August 21, 2017 was also a Leo eclipse, at 28 degrees 53 minutes. The 2026 Leo eclipse is covered in the August 12, 2026 solar eclipse guide. Every 2027 eclipse is listed in eclipses 2027.

A zodiac wheel of the 2027 eclipses, computed from the ephemeris. The lunar nodes are the two points where the Moon's tilted orbit crosses the Sun's path. An eclipse can only happen while the Sun is within about 18.5 degrees of a node, so 2027 has 2 eclipse seasons: Jan 23, 2027 to Feb 26, 2027, around the North Node in Aquarius and Jul 16, 2027 to Aug 22, 2027, around the South Node in Leo. The 5 eclipses are: a annular solar eclipse on February 6, 2027 at 17 degrees 38 minutes Aquarius, a penumbral lunar eclipse on February 20, 2027 at 1 degrees 59 minutes Virgo, a penumbral lunar eclipse on July 18, 2027 at 25 degrees 58 minutes Capricorn, a total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027 at 9 degrees 55 minutes Leo and a penumbral lunar eclipse on August 17, 2027 at 24 degrees 4 minutes Aquarius.
Why 2027's eclipses come in two seasonsThe outer track is the Sun's path through the year; the inner track is where the full Moon stands, opposite the Sun. The dashed lines are the lunar nodes. While the Sun is within 18.5° of one, a new moon can eclipse the Sun and a full moon at the other node can be eclipsed.

Which signs and houses does the August 2, 2027 eclipse affect?
The eclipse lands in the house of your chart that holds 9 degrees of Leo. With whole-sign houses, counted from your rising sign or your Sun sign, it is:
| Your sign | House | What the eclipse completes or releases |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 5th | A romance, creative project or way of having fun |
| Taurus | 4th | A home, a living arrangement or a family role |
| Gemini | 3rd | A local tie, a daily routine of talking and writing, a sibling dynamic |
| Cancer | 2nd | A way of earning or spending, and a question of self-worth |
| Leo | 1st | Your old image of yourself: this is the most personal eclipse of the year for you |
| Virgo | 12th | Hidden stress, a secret or a habit of self-sabotage |
| Libra | 11th | A friendship, a group or a long-range hope |
| Scorpio | 10th | A career chapter or a public role |
| Sagittarius | 9th | A belief, a course of study or a travel plan |
| Capricorn | 8th | Shared money, debt or an intimate bond |
| Aquarius | 7th | A partnership, business or romantic, reaches a turning point |
| Pisces | 6th | A job, a health routine or a daily duty |
Who feels it most? People with a planet or angle within about 3 degrees of 9 degrees 55 minutes of Leo, Aquarius, Taurus or Scorpio. By Sun sign, that is anyone born within about three days of August 2 (Leo), January 30 (Aquarius), April 30 (Taurus) or November 2 (Scorpio), in almost any year. Leo and Aquarius take the conjunction and opposition. Taurus and Scorpio take the square, which tends to feel like a push from outside. Check your rising sign and Moon too: the free birth chart reading lists every placement with its exact degree, so you can see whether one sits near 9 degrees of a fixed sign.
What should you do on the day of the eclipse?
- Release rather than launch. South Node eclipses favour ending, clearing and finishing. Save the big new start for later in August: the Virgo new moon of August 31 sits right on Jupiter and is a far better day to begin something.
- Watch the weeks either side. Eclipse effects tend to show up in the weeks around the date rather than on the day. Note what changes between the July 18 lunar eclipse and the August 17 lunar eclipse.
- Do not force a relationship decision. Venus is inside the eclipse and the Aquarius seventh house sits opposite it. Let the dust settle.
- If you travel to see it, plan around the heat. Southern Egypt and Arabia are at the height of summer on August 2, and the eclipse falls around midday there.
The new moon times for the rest of the year are in the new moon calendar 2027, and the full moons in the full moon calendar 2027. If you are a Leo, your full year is in the Leo 2027 horoscope.
