January 2027 Astrology Calendar: Every Date That Matters, Ranked

Last verified October 2026

January 2027 brings Mars retrograde in Virgo from January 10, a Capricorn New Moon, Aquarius season and the Wolf supermoon in Leo. Every date and time, ranked.

January 2027 Astrology Calendar: Every Date That Matters, Ranked

January 2027 is the month Mars turns retrograde. It stations at 10 degrees 26 minutes of Virgo on January 10 and moves backward until April 1, the only Mars retrograde of 2027 and 2028. Around it sit a New Moon in Capricorn on January 7, Mercury meeting Pluto in Aquarius on January 16, the Sun entering Aquarius on January 20 and the Wolf Moon in Leo on January 22, the only full-moon supermoon of the year. Every date below is computed from the ephemeris rather than copied from a list. Times are in Universal Time with Eastern, Pacific, UK and India conversions. North America is on standard time and the UK on GMT all month, so Eastern is five hours behind UTC, Pacific eight hours behind, the UK matches UTC and India is five and a half hours ahead.

January follows the December 2026 calendar, where Saturn and Neptune turned direct and Jupiter turned retrograde. It ends with the eclipse season about to open: the first eclipse of 2027 falls on February 6, the same day as Chinese New Year.

The seven January dates that matter most, ranked

  1. January 10: Mars turns retrograde at 10 degrees 26 minutes of Virgo. Exact at 13:01 UTC, which is 8:01 am Eastern and 6:31 pm in India. Mars backs into Leo on February 21 and turns direct at 20 degrees 56 minutes of Leo on April 1. It does not clear the ground it covers until June 8. Effort, anger and drive turn inward for almost three months. Repair, redo and rethink; do not force.
  2. January 22: the Wolf Moon at 2 degrees 15 minutes of Leo, a supermoon. At 357,635 kilometres it is the closest full moon of 2027, fourteen and a half hours after the closest perigee of the year. It is exact at 12:17 UTC, 7:17 am Eastern and 5:47 pm in India. The Sun and Moon both make easy aspects to Uranus and Neptune within half a degree, so this is an inventive, generous full moon rather than a harsh one. The full moon calendar 2027 has all thirteen.
  3. January 7: New Moon at 17 degrees 19 minutes of Capricorn. Exact at 20:25 UTC, which is 3:25 pm Eastern, 12:25 pm Pacific and 1:55 am on January 8 in India. It is the farthest new moon of 2027, half a day after the farthest apogee of the year. The fresh start of the month, aimed at work, structure and long-range plans. Venus enters Sagittarius the same morning.
  4. January 16: Mercury conjunct Pluto at 4 degrees 49 minutes of Aquarius. Exact at 02:49 UTC, the evening of January 15 in North America (9:49 pm Eastern). Three days after Mercury enters Aquarius, conversations go deep, research pays and secrets surface. Choose words carefully.
  5. January 20: the Sun enters Aquarius. At 07:29 UTC, 2:29 am Eastern, 11:29 pm Pacific on January 19 and 12:59 pm in India. Capricorn season ends and the Capricorn season 2026 guide covers the four weeks before it.
  6. January 25: the Sun meets Pluto, and Mercury's retrograde shadow begins. The Sun conjoins Pluto at 5 degrees 6 minutes of Aquarius at 08:00 UTC. At 18:58 UTC Mercury reaches 20 degrees 55 minutes of Aquarius, the degree it will return to when it turns direct on March 3. From here, the ground of the first Mercury retrograde of 2027 is being laid.
  7. January 15: Uranus sextile Neptune, exact. At 07:21 UTC, with both planets at 1 degree 56 minutes, Uranus in Gemini and Neptune in Aries. It is the fourth of five exact passes of this generational aspect between August 2025 and June 6, 2027. Slow, but it colours the whole year.

January opens with the Sun and Mercury together at 10 degrees of Capricorn, Venus late in Scorpio, Mars slowing in Virgo and Jupiter retrograde in Leo. Saturn and Neptune, both direct since December, sit in early Aries. Uranus is retrograde at 2 degrees of Gemini all month and turns direct on February 8. Pluto moves forward in early Aquarius. For the whole year at a glance, see the 2027 astrology calendar.

Week by week

January 1 to 7: the year's quiet start, then the New Moon. Mercury meets the Sun on New Year's Day at 11 degrees of Capricorn, a clear-headed start for plans and resolutions. The Earth reaches perihelion, its closest point to the Sun, on the evening of January 2 in North America. Venus squares Jupiter on the 3rd, in its last days in Scorpio: generous, possibly too generous with money. On the 7th Venus moves into Sagittarius and the New Moon in Capricorn follows that afternoon in the Americas, evening in the UK and the small hours of the 8th in India.

January 8 to 14: Mars stops. Venus trines Neptune and opposes Uranus on the 9th, the same day: romance with a surprise in it, or a sudden change of heart. Then Mars stations retrograde on the morning of the 10th in North America. In the days around a station the planet barely moves and its themes feel heaviest, so expect stalls in projects, health routines and work in progress. Mercury enters Aquarius on the 13th (the evening of the 12th on the West Coast). It immediately makes easy aspects to Neptune and Uranus on the 14th. Ideas arrive faster than the Mars-slowed world can use them. Write them down.

January 15 to 21: depth and the turn to Aquarius. Uranus and Neptune meet in their exact sextile on the 15th. The Moon reaches its first quarter that evening in the UK. Venus trines Saturn an hour later, a good moment to commit to someone or something. Mercury conjoins Pluto a few hours later, on the evening of the 15th in North America and the early hours of the 16th in the UK and India: the week's most searching conversation. Venus squares Mars on the 16th, so desire and frustration rub. Mercury sextiles Saturn on the 18th and practical decisions come easier. The Sun enters Aquarius on the 20th. The Moon reaches its closest perigee of 2027 on the 21st.

January 22 to 31: the Wolf Moon and the shadow. The full moon in Leo arrives on the morning of the 22nd in the Americas and the evening in India, with the Sun trine Uranus and sextile Neptune hours earlier. The Sun meets Pluto on the 25th and Mercury steps into its retrograde shadow that evening in the UK. Mercury opposes Jupiter on the 27th: big talk, big promises, so check the details. Venus trines Jupiter on the 29th, the luckiest day of the month for love and money. The last quarter Moon in Scorpio follows that morning. Mercury slips into Pisces on the evening of January 31 in North America.

Is Mercury retrograde in January 2027?

No. Mercury moves forward all of January. It enters Aquarius on January 13 at 06:06 UTC and Pisces on February 1 at 01:26 UTC, which is the evening of January 31 in North America. Its pre-retrograde shadow begins on January 25 at 20 degrees 55 minutes of Aquarius, and the retrograde itself starts on February 9 at 5 degrees 59 minutes of Pisces. Every date for all three 2027 cycles is in the Mercury retrograde 2027 guide.

Is Mars retrograde in January 2027?

Yes, from January 10. Mars stations retrograde at 13:01 UTC at 10 degrees 26 minutes of Virgo. It has been crossing that stretch of sky since November 5, 2026, when it reached 20 degrees 56 minutes of Leo, the degree where it will turn direct. Mars backs into Leo on February 21 at 14:15 UTC, turns direct on April 1 and finally clears its post-retrograde shadow on June 8. A Mars retrograde comes roughly every two years and this is the only one in 2027 and 2028, so its themes run through the first half of the year: what you are working hard at, where your energy leaks and what you are angry about.

What planets are retrograde in January 2027?

Three. Jupiter has been retrograde in Leo since December 13, 2026 and stays retrograde until April 13, 2027 UTC. Uranus has been retrograde in Gemini since September 10, 2026 and turns direct on February 8, 2027. Mars joins them on January 10. Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Neptune and Pluto move forward all month.

When is the full moon in January 2027, and is it a supermoon?

The January full moon, the Wolf Moon, is exact at 12:17 UTC on January 22, 2027. That is 7:17 am Eastern, 4:17 am Pacific, 12:17 pm in the UK and 5:47 pm in India, so it is January 22 in all five zones. It falls at 2 degrees 15 minutes of Leo, opposite the Sun at 2 degrees 14 minutes of Aquarius. At 357,635 kilometres it is a supermoon under both common rules, the strict 360,000 kilometre cut and the rule of within 90 percent of the year's closest approach. It is the only full-moon supermoon of 2027 and the closest full moon of the year. The Moon passes perigee 14.5 hours earlier, at 357,273 kilometres, the closest of the year.

When is the new moon in January 2027?

The New Moon is exact at 20:25 UTC on January 7, 2027: 3:25 pm Eastern, 12:25 pm Pacific, 8:25 pm in the UK and 1:55 am on January 8 in India. It falls at 17 degrees 19 minutes of Capricorn. At 406,514 kilometres it is the farthest new moon of 2027, sometimes called a micromoon, 12 hours after the farthest apogee of the year. The next new moon, on February 6, is an annular solar eclipse in Aquarius and the start of Chinese New Year.

When does Aquarius season start in 2027?

The Sun enters Aquarius at 07:29 UTC on January 20, 2027. That is 2:29 am Eastern on January 20 but 11:29 pm Pacific on January 19, so on the West Coast Aquarius season begins the night before. In the UK it is 7:29 am and in India 12:59 pm on January 20. The Sun stays in Aquarius until February 18 at 21:33 UTC.

The Moon in January 2027: quarters and void-of-course periods

The quarter Moons mark the turning points of each lunar cycle: the first quarter on January 15 at 25 degrees 28 minutes of Aries (20:35 UTC) asks for action on what the New Moon started, and the last quarter on January 29 at 9 degrees 18 minutes of Scorpio (10:56 UTC) asks what to let go of before the eclipse.

A void-of-course Moon is the stretch between the Moon's last major aspect to a planet in one sign and its entry into the next. Traditional electional astrology avoids starting new things in it. Most last a few hours. These are the longest of the month:

Void-of-course MoonStarts (UTC)Ends (UTC)EasternLength
Cancer into Leo, over the supermoon perigeeJanuary 21, 00:45January 22, 08:457:45 pm January 20 to 3:45 am January 2232 hours
Libra into ScorpioJanuary 25, 17:55January 26, 11:1212:55 pm January 25 to 6:12 am January 2617 hours

Pisces into AriesJanuary 13, 07:32January 13, 21:132:32 am to 4:13 pm January 1314 hours

The 32-hour void before the Wolf Moon is the one to plan around. If you are signing, launching or making a first date, do it before 7:45 pm Eastern on January 20 (12:45 am January 21 in the UK, 6:15 am January 21 in India) or after the Moon enters Leo.

Is there an eclipse in January 2027?

No, but January leads straight into one. Eclipses happen when a new or full moon falls close to the lunar nodes, and on January 22 the Sun is still 19.5 degrees from the North Node in Aquarius, too far for the Wolf Moon to be eclipsed. By January 31 the gap is under 10 degrees. The eclipse season opens with the annular solar eclipse at 17 degrees 38 minutes of Aquarius on February 6 and closes with a penumbral lunar eclipse in Virgo on February 20. If January's New Moon or full moon falls on a sensitive point in your chart, it is the preview. The dates, paths and times are in the eclipses 2027 guide. The festival that shares February 6 is covered in Chinese New Year 2027.

What the January 2027 astrology means for every sign

Read for your Sun sign and your rising sign. Houses are counted whole-sign from your sign. The New Moon lands in the house that holds Capricorn. Mars turns retrograde in the house that holds Virgo. The Wolf Moon lights the house that holds Leo, and from January 20 the Sun moves into the house that holds Aquarius. Each sign name links to its horoscope page.

  • Aries: the New Moon opens your tenth house of career, the best fresh start of the month for a professional goal. Mars, your ruler, turns retrograde in your sixth house of work and health, so fix the routine rather than adding to it. The Wolf Moon in your fifth house brings a romance or creative project to a head.
  • Taurus: the New Moon in your ninth house favours study, travel and publishing. Venus, your ruler, moves into your eighth house of shared money on the 7th and trines Jupiter on the 29th. Mars retrograde in your fifth house cools a romance or a hobby for review. The Wolf Moon falls in your fourth house of home.
  • Gemini: Mercury, your ruler, meets the Sun on the 1st and Pluto on the 16th, a month of serious conversations. The New Moon resets your eighth house of shared resources. Mars retrograde in your fourth house brings home repairs or family matters back for a second pass.
  • Cancer: the New Moon lands in your seventh house of partnership, a fresh start with a partner or a new agreement. The Wolf Moon in your second house closes a money matter. Mars retrograde in your third house slows paperwork, short trips and conversations with siblings.
  • Leo: the Wolf Moon on January 22 is in your sign, your personal high point of the winter. Jupiter is retrograde in your sign all month, so growth turns inward for review. Mars retrograde in your second house asks you to rework a budget before spending on something new.
  • Virgo: Mars turns retrograde in your sign on January 10 and stays retrograde until April. Pace yourself and finish old business before starting new. The New Moon in your fifth house is a fresh start for romance and creative work, and Mercury, your ruler, enters your sixth house of work on the 13th.
  • Libra: the New Moon in your fourth house is a reset for home and family. Venus, your ruler, enters your third house on the 7th and trines Jupiter on the 29th, a good day to say what you want. Mars retrograde in your twelfth house favours rest and private work.
  • Scorpio: Venus leaves your sign on the 7th after a stay that began on December 4. The New Moon in your third house favours writing, learning and local plans. The Wolf Moon lights your tenth house of career, and the Sun's meeting with Pluto, your modern ruler, on the 25th falls in your fourth house of home.
  • Sagittarius: Venus enters your sign on the 7th and brings back charm and confidence. It trines Jupiter, your ruler, on the 29th. The New Moon in your second house is a fresh start for money and self-worth. Mars retrograde in your tenth house slows a career push for review.
  • Capricorn: the New Moon on January 7 is in your sign, your personal new year and the best moment of the month to set an intention about yourself. Saturn, your ruler, moves forward in your fourth house. Mars retrograde in your ninth house delays travel or study plans.
  • Aquarius: your season opens on January 20. Mercury enters your sign on the 13th and meets Pluto in it on the 16th, so your voice carries weight. The Sun joins Pluto in your sign on the 25th. The Wolf Moon in your seventh house brings a relationship question to a head.
  • Pisces: the New Moon in your eleventh house refreshes friendships and group plans. Mars turns retrograde in your seventh house of partnership, so an old disagreement with a partner may need a second conversation. Mercury enters your sign on the evening of January 31 in North America.

What to do with January 2027

Set an intention on the Capricorn New Moon of January 7 and finish anything that needs Mars's push before January 10. Treat Mars retrograde as a time to repair, revise and recover rather than to fight. Use Mercury's meeting with Pluto on January 15 and 16 for the hard conversation you have been putting off. Plan around the 32-hour void before the Wolf Moon, then let the supermoon on January 22 show you what the month has been building. From January 25, back up your files and finalize contracts before Mercury turns retrograde on February 9.
